Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 21617 Palermo 52-Inch Energy Star Brushed-Nickel Ceiling Fan with 5 Maple/Cherry BladesCustomer Review: Remote control does not consistently work Summary: 1 Stars
Bought the Palermo because of its look and the hope that by avoiding a Home Depot/Lowe's knock-off I would buy a superior product.
The controls worked sporadically after installation - but getting a change in fan speed or light required dozens of button presses. Occasionally something would change - so the remote did communicate with the fan - but completely inconsistently.
Trying different dipswitch settings and a different remote control accomplished nothing; neither did changing relative position between the fan and I.
Calls to customer care took much too long to answer - 45 minute hold times were my experience - after trying to leave a message (per the automated system direction) in a full mailbox meant going back into queue.
The answer I finally received from customer service was "your remote is experiencing interference. Not our problem."
Without an alternate way to bypass the inferior quality remote control, and incredibly poor customer service support, I would strongly urge anyone looking for a fan to look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Quality for the fan is great, but the manual is another story Summary: 4 Stars
I guess I should have had help from someone when I was installing this fan, but I proceeded anyway.
Overall, the quality of the fan after the installation seems to be exellent. It looks better than the stock picture once installed. Since this was the first ceiling fan I have ever bought and installed by myself, all alone, I cannot compare it with any other brand or ones within other price range. But, again, overall, I would recommend others going for it.
Something to warn by the way.
If someone who has never had any experience installing any ceiling fan, be aware of the included manual. It's an absolutely horror to person like that. I had to look over and over for wiring diagram, and hooking the fan to the fixture. No reference can be found on Hunter's website, so no help from that either.
Anyway, I was able to finish up the job, but again, if someone wants to install it alone, at least ask someone who had experience or have one more person next you to install it.
Customer Review: Very Solid Fan Summary: 4 Stars
I got this fan because of the great contemporary styling and remote control. Almost bought it at Home Depot for $280 but then found one on-line for about $200. FYI, Costco occasionally sells what seesm to be this same fan (only in their warehouse) for $139, but they call it the Hunter Westside. I just bought my second and third ones to replace my dated fans. I had to change some dip switches so that one remote doesn't control all three at once.
There is a slight delay when turning the light on and off and the light quality isn't the greatest for high usage, since it is a cicrular flourescent lamp.
The fan seems to have a light hum to it, but is otherwise very smooth, stable and quiet. I was hoping to learn the signal for my universal remote, but it is radio frequency versus infrared and not possible. RF is the better quality, since it doesn't require a direct line of sight. Overall I would highly recommend this fan, particularly if you can pay $140 versus $280.
Customer Review: Love this FAN! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very powerful and attractive fan from Hunter. It has been installed for two years in our house and runs great. We live in FL and usually use the lowest setting except for the extremely hot summer months we may bump up to the middle setting of the fan with the a/c to keep cool and costs down. We have encountered the issue of the light coming on and the fan speed turning higher on its own once in a while, but with the handy remote we would just re-adjust it and we are good again. We assumed that receiver/transmitter thing was affected from other remotes in the area - no big deal and since the fan should only be used when people are actually in the room...we shut the wall switch off when we left the room and the neighbor's remotes couldn't affect the fan. However, I just read another review and they said Hunter sent a replacement part to fix this issue...maybe it's not the neighbor's remotes afterall. I will try and update later.
Customer Review: Ceiling fan is a breeze Summary: 5 Stars
The fan installed quite easily and all parts were included along with very clear instructions. The most important and time consuming step was the preparation of the ceiling box for mounting the fan. Determine the fan's location and size up the work you will need done to mount the thing before you order.
After you receive the package DO NOT assemble the fan until you are ready to mount it! The assembled unit will be in the way of your work to prepare the ceiling fixture.
Hanging the fan to the prepared ceiling box went smoothly.
They provide long wires to accommodate extensions lengths from the ceiling. I mounted my unit directly to the ceiling and had to trim these wires to fit. The wiring diagrams are very clear and the was not a problem.
The remote works very well and the fan is very quite. I would buy this again. No regrets.
