Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 33202 Carefree Humidifier PlusCustomer Review: Starts great, then declines. I owned (<- past tense) three. Summary: 3 Stars
I have had three of these because I got good deals on them; however, I now have none. All have failed.
First of all, my ears ring constantly from exposure to loud noises throughout my life. I welcome the background "white noise" they provided. I also recognize though that they were pretty loud on higher speeds. Low is fine, but it doesn't humidify much. Medium or high both give off substantial noise.
Like others noted, the first thing to go is the night light. It was a very cool light while it worked because it shined through the water tank and gave "wavy" images on the walls. Looking at it gave me the calming feeling like watching a fish tank. They were much less fun without the cool lighted walls and ceilings. It really was pretty cool while it lasted.
The assembly after cleaning is kind of tricky, but it can be done. Depending on your water, the procedure might have to be done often. If you can put in distilled water, I highly recommend it. Much of the decline of mine was due to water deposits. It's easy to soak the screens in vinegar, but a little more difficult for the assembly itself.
As noted above, you cannot soak all of the parts to clean them. The resultant water deposits eventually clog the holes that the water is supposed to fall through. The cool mist is then replaced by random water droplets spraying out of the top. Selecting the "high" setting is then no longer an option. "Medium" still gets the job done but not as well.
The last problems I encountered were the motors binding up. I was able to free them with a little bit of oil. The downside of that is that the "cool mist" smelled like a hobby shop because of the oil. I don't mind the smell of WD40, but I don't imagine I represent a majority on that note.
Conclusion: If I could get a VERY GOOD deal on this item I would buy it again for the noise (which I like) and the lighting provided. If you read this and the price is kind of high, look elsewhere.
Customer Review: The Hunter Humidifier... Summary: 4 Stars
This model may not have the nite-light but otherwise is the same.
The Hunter (NiteGlo Night Light) Humidifier fulfills my needs for an overnight humidifier. Given I do not run my furnace from 10pm until 4am my bedroom does get a little dry and waking up with a dry mouth several times a night can be annoying at best. So I decided to pick up this machine with the hope it would end my suffering. With varying speeds this little unit does what I need it to do. The humidifier itself has a washable filter so you don't need to constantly buy expensive filters. (It comes with a nite-light so that you can monitor the water level easier and provides minimal light to see in the dark, but not bright enough to interrupt sleeping.)
The motor can be a little loud and it will take some getting used to if you are a lite sleeper. The water container is pretty small and takes about 48 hours on medium speed before refilling. The humidifier works by pushing air through the water soaked filter, so it doesn't actually mist like some humidifiers do. When the water container goes empty the fan does become louder and the water left in the bottom of the unit does gurgle pretty loud. The water as it filters down into the tub does gurgle as well but its not that big of a deal. The unit breaks down into five different parts, the water container, tub, filter holder, and fan unit, making it easy to clean. The parts(not including the fan unit) made it through my dishwasher fine and the filters are easily washable in hot sink soapy water. All-in-all a good machine.
Customer Review: This works EXCELLENT for me! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm pretty shocked to read the other reviews that are negative in regards to this item. I LOVE MINE! It lasts a good long time, over a day for me on a low setting. I put Aromatherapy Oils in mine all the time and boy does this ever make my home smell good. I generally keep it in my living room, but am going to BUY ANOTHER ONE for my bedroom as well. Mostly I like it because it makes everything smell so good and it's very easy to use, there's no filter to bother with, just fill it up in the sink and add some essentials oils to the water and you're gonna have a sweet smelling room!!! I think it's AWESOME! I have a little dog who I've spoiled and he has doggy-puppy pads next to the front door because my dog sometimes gets up earlier than I do and sometimes it makes the carpet smell bad when he misses the puppy pad a little bit, but when I have this Humidifier on with some Essential Oils it covers the stinky smell very well. I just can't say enough about this great humidifier, and Yes, I have purchased other brands and types and they were so cheaply made they broke soon after I bought them, but this one I've had for atleast 2 yrs and it's still going strong. I'd love to have a small one like this if they ever would make one that's battery operated to put in my closet to keep my clothes smelling good and fresh after laundering. It's GREAT!
Customer Review: Great humidifier that has lasted a long time Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this humidifier 5 years ago and it has run every winter from December till March nearly 24 hours a day. I like this unit because it humidifies my bedroom well and is easy to disinfect. I see people complaining about how they have to clean this unit so often.... I can tell you if you're using ANY humidifier for weeks on end without disinfecting you're going to be spreading pathogens. This is not based on hearsay, but from my college education in pathogens. You cant disinfect other humidifiers like you can with this one.
I disinfect this Hunter Humidifier once a day with Peroxide and every once in awhile with Vinegar. It takes ten minutes and I do it while getting ready to go to bed....not a big deal. The vinegar is a weak disinfectant but does remove the scale. I'm in the midwest with hard water. The permawick filter lasted 3 years. The motor just went out after a calculated 3000 hours of use.
I think the reason why so many people have burnt out motors is because they let the unit run dry or dont let the lower resevoir fill completely before turning the unit on to high. Running it dry spins up the fan and probably burns out the motor
Needless to say I will be purchasing another one.
Customer Review: Failed as a temporary humidifier Summary: 1 Stars
This unit failed after 2 months. My larger Bemis unit had quit after about 10 years in the middle of Wisconsin winter I needed a replacement quick and big box stores typically don't stock humidifiers after fall so of the slim pickings I took this on sale. The permafilter is a lie. It's like any other wicking filter. After two months the filter was as hard as rock or stone and flithy. Instructions said to wash it in vingar but even limeaway couldn't save it. The whole interior of the unit was coated in mineral flake and I had been using softened water. The unit would also randomly pee on the floor and pump water out the side for no apparent reason. Overall, even though I needed a humidifier to stay healthy this was a bad machine and a few weeks after spending hours cleaning it and replacing the filters, its simply quit working except for the nightlight. It's out in the garbage right now and I'm glad to see it gone. If you own this awful thing, I recommend running it only in a tray. It destroyed some of my wood baseboards from the leaking.
