Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 34357 3-1/2-Gallon CareFree Plus Humidifier with PermaWick Filter

Customer Review: Excellent results with a low maintenance cost
Summary: 5 Stars

I looked at those $250 humidifiers but just couldn't pull the trigger, especially since this unit is so reasonably priced, well-reviewed and has a low cost of ownership. It seems like we paid $10-$15 for each filter in our cheap Wal-Mart unit and it would need to be replaced every 2 weeks.

This machine is built well and has useful features. I like the readout that tells me the current level of humidity in my room. I like the large water tank and the sturdy filter. With the fan on high, it is too loud to sleep with and it makes noise like a small stream. However, its noise output on high is still quieter than my other evaporative humidifier on its low setting.

With this unit on low, the fan is very quiet. We like to sleep with a quiet fan on, and with this humidifier on low, I still turn our fan on so that the noise level is enough to drown out other little nighttime sounds. Just to be safe, I bought some "humidifier bacteriostatic treatment" solution to put into the base every once in a while.

Customer Review: 1 1/2 Gallon Output Humidifier
Summary: 1 Stars

I did about 8 hours of research to find just the right humidifier for our 1600 sqf townhouse. I initially was impressed by the nightlight, the dishwasher safe tray and the slick design. However, the humidifier would only bring up the humidity to about 45 - 50 % on high. We had to keep it running on high the whole time to even achieve this much humidity. Keep in mind that the humidity level around the humidifier is higher than on the second floor or the basement of our townhouse. After running on high for about two weeks it broke and we had to send it back.
In the meantime I had purchased another, smaller humidifier for our basement, also from Hunter. This was suppossed to spit out 2 gallons a day, but only did about half a gallon. Overall, I cannot recommend these Hunter products.
After we returned both mashines, we ordered a Lasko 9 gallon humidifier and we like it. Our humidity level is comfortable throughout the whole house. We keep the speed on low and it uses about 3 gallons of water a day. Much better!

Customer Review: Worked great for a week

I purchased this unit ealier this month, based on prior good experience with a smaller model I bought 3 years ago, which is still working. The humidifier ran fine for 6-7 days, running 24/7 because it is pretty dry here and this is the only humidifier on the first floor. The next day I got up and the humidistat display says "HI" and the unit won't run (it had read "LO" the whole rest of the time). The humidity in the room is 20-30% based on a weather station hygrometer, and the unit won't run now even if I change the setting to 70% humidity. If I power cycle the unit it runs until the humidstat gets a reading (HI) and then immediately shuts off. Clearly the part I need that evaporates water does work, but the part I don't need--the humidistat that would only tell me the humidity is low--does not. So I returned the unit today and bought another brand locally. I am very disappointed, I really like the fact this was an evaporative unit (not cool mist) and the large tank, which I only had to fill once a day.

Customer Review: New model is worse than the older one
Summary: 2 Stars

This is my second Hunter humidifier.

First one was analog similar to that new digital one. It is still working.

New model worked fine for one winter season- humidifying the large room.

Water tank is big and very convenient to fill - we were happy and humidified!

On the second season - humidity meter stopped working normally, then after two weeks unit developed ticking noise getting very loud.

I am en engineer and humidifier is not a rocket science.

After removing a few screws it became obvious that motor "rubs" and propeller shaft connects to the water pump through rubber tube that ages and apparently stops keeping its position, so shaft slides developing the rub of the pump propeller against the housing. Sadly omission.

This is a design issue, and I may assume that now not only the manufacture is made in China, but the design too.

My next model will be ultrasonic - I am tired on noise.

Customer Review: Slow to raise humidity.

First...the things I like about this unit is the PermaWick and the size of the tank. I needed to find a unit that could cut the maintenance in half. This unit can run constantly for a day and a half, and then the refilling is easy with it's carrying handle. Now, after having it run a week now, it has never reached the 40% humidity setting. It fluctuates up and down and up and down between 24% and 36%. The main reason I purchased a humidifier is my severe dry eye syndrome, and it works fine for that. A humidifier also eliminates the dry bloody noses, too. I also have a smaller Vornado humidifier. The humidistat on the Hunter and on the Vornado never read even close to the same reading. The Hunter reads at least 15% points lower than the Vornado. One of them is obviously wrong, and just by the feel of the air in the room, I'm thinking the Hunter is reading low. I'll check back in a year and see how well it's working then and if I'm unhappy or still satisfied.
