Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hunter 90021 12-Inch Oscillating Table Fan, Brushed Nickel

Customer Review: Loud and clicky
Summary: 2 Stars

I just received this product today, as soon as I turned it on it began clicking constantly while oscillating. The pin that you pull up or down to oscillate gets stuck causing a click, click click. It eventually stops after a few clicks and resumes, occurring a couple times every 3-5 minutes.

Not what I expect from a $70+ fan.

On top of the clicking it also sounds like your riding in a small regional jet! I fly constantly for work and that is the first thing that popped into my mind when I turned it on. Having the fan on the 2nd or 3rd setting is too loud to have the TV on. When it's on the first setting I feel I can watch TV without everyone else in my apartment complex hearing the TV as well.

I purchased this fan thinking I would spend the extra money and keep it for several years. I've owned several fans and usually get a new one each summer and this is by far the loudest.

I am impressed with how it looks and the air circulation it provides although it doesn't blow away the circulation power of other small fans I've owned.

Overall: Disappointing. I will return it if I can't stop it from making the clicking noise when it oscillates.

Customer Review: Don't Make 'Em The Way They Used To
Summary: 2 Stars

Purchased locally in July 2004 and used seasonally since. Bought it for art-deco looks.

Low and medium speeds quiet enough. High speed a bit noisy. Somewhat difficult to clean--stripped head on grill ring retainer screw when removing it.

Worked well until this year when low speed ceased functioning and medium speed only worked if "primed" by starting on high.

After introducing an intermittent metal-on-metal squeak, fan ceased entirely. Disassembled (not easy), cleaned, oiled (not required according to manual) and reassembled. High and low speeds restored, though slow speed produces squeak seemingly asking for more lubrication. Medium speed gone--switch damaged by my unauthorized meddling perhaps.

When I was young (I'm 66) my father had a large, noisy, heavy metal oscillating table fan inherited from his father that never required any service that I recall and worked whenever it was switched on.

On the whole, I'm satisfied and may buy another when this conks out completely. Do not expect you are purchasing a future heirloom.

Customer Review: This Fan is...What?...Can't Hear You...Say Again...
Summary: 3 Stars

Got the fan from Amazon today, took it out of the box and was pleasantly surprised. Very nice looking table fan. Very heavy, seems like it would be very stable with little vibration. My wife "stole" my Restoration Hardware standing fan from my office to use upstairs in the bedroom, so I got her this one so I could get mine back. We plugged it in and turned it on (really like the little lever to adjust the speed). I turned it on number 1 and thought I might have it on the highest speed, so bumped it up to 2 and then 3. My wife thought I had it on high the whole time and when I turned it off, so she asked if that was the low setting as the fan blades spun down! Needless to say, the title of my review says it all. At least it will be like white noise and drown out everything else outside the room (including our 2 infant children). This is not a fan to put in a quiet area. Be prepared to turn up the TV or have to talk very loudly to have a conversation around this fan. It may have to go back if we wake up and the kids have had a party all morning and have broken into the formula cabinet!

Customer Review: Wind machine
Summary: 3 Stars

The Hunter 90021 oscillating fan is a well-built wind machine best suited for large spaces. The brushed nickel finish is attractive, and the overall construction is "heavy duty". I use the fan on the floor, so the three position switch on the front of the fan is perfect...I can move it easily with a toe. The fan is much stronger than most of the other oscillating fans I have owned which is both good and bad. On low speed, the fan still moves a lot of air, and all of that wind makes considerable noise. In fact, when I first switched the fan on, I thought "low" was "high". I was disappointed to find that the medium and high speeds would be mostly unusable in my house. Hunter should have labeled them "3" and "5" as in hurricane categories 3 and 5! The medium and high speeds totally obiliterate converations, TV dialogue, etc. In summary: if you are looking for a fan with a quiet, gentle low speed, keep looking. On the other hand, if you want "white noise" to mask environmental sounds, then the Hunter will be a great choice for you. Just be prepared for the gale force winds!

Customer Review: Quiet, Attractive, Functional...if within 2 ft. from you
Summary: 3 Stars

I was originally attracted by the antique metal fan design and appreciated how quiet it is when in operation (Hunter branding was also a plus). I purchased this fan approximately one year ago and have used it every night for that year in lowest setting, non-oscillating mode. I originally had it on a table about 2 feet from my head, where it worked very well! About 6 months ago, I moved it to a small table 5 feet from my bed where I have noticed a problem that seems to be getting worse with time. It does not push air through the middle part of the circular blades, only out the sides of the unit, making it somewhat useless to cool oneself at night, I have noticed this in all speed settings, in both oscillation modes. While it is still very quiet and I like the design, I don't think I can justify keeping it for much longer.

There are better functioning (and cheaper) metal fans out there, such as the Lakewood HV-9C fan, which I would recommend over this one.
