We keep our house on the chilly side in the winter, so I've never been able to successfully germinate seeds before. I've only just received this seed mat, however can already tell that it heats to a very gentle warm temperature, and it is a perfect size for the one flat that I will be starting this year. Since there is no on or off switch, & it just plugs into the wall to heat, if you can afford to get the thermostat adjuster it would probably be a good idea. But this will still do the job without it!
One month later: I've now started to raise seedlings, and the time saved in germination, as well as the percentage of seeds that germinate, is amazing. The seedlings come up in half the time noted on the seed pack, and they are so strong! The seeds are from last year, and yet I have between a 95 - 99% germination rate. I am also using a grow light, and cannot recommend the combination strongly enough for beautiful, healthy plants. Because the 9 x 20 size was all I could afford at the time with the grow light, I've already outgrown the space and will either be buying another one, or a larger mat. Have had no problems with temperature being too hot, and do not use a thermostat. Might end up putting some rigid insulation underneath on colder days, just to experiment to see if it makes a difference . . . but really don't need any change. Just wonderful!!!
