Tools and Hardware Reviews of InSinkErator 444; 3/4 Horsepower Food Waste DisposerCustomer Review: Failed due to corrosion, replacing with different model Summary: 1 Stars
Like others have noted here, my 444 started to leak on account of corrosion of the unit's housing. Mine was about 10yrs old and was used VERY infrequently (perhaps twice a month). I plan to replace it myself and I wanted to buy an identical unit to make the job easy, but on account of the other reviews I decided it would be unwise to purchase the same unit again. I investigated other options. The Insinkerator Evolution Compact Disposer has, based on the mfr spec sheets, almost the same dimensions as the 444 (not EXACTLY the same, but very similar); it is the most dimensionally similar of any upper-tier Insinkerator disposer in current production. Notably, it appears to employ the same cam-lock mounting method for attaching it to the sink, so swapping it in should be a no-brainer. The wastewater discharge is located the same vertical distance beneath the sink on both units, i.e., 6"; however, the 444's discharge is 5" offset from the vertical and the Compact's is offset 5.75" (this information comes from the mfrs datasheets). Therefore, I expect that I can re-use the same wastewater trap and connect it to the original plumbing with just a little "fiddling". The electrical access is in the same location on both, so wiring it should be simple too. So, with these things in mind, I would encourage others to consider the same option.
