Customer Review: INSINKERATOR-with ON/OFF Switch in Cover --OK QUALITY
Summary: 4 Stars

This product is well designed and installed easier than I would have thought. It replaced a 22 year old similar cover-control model. This is the only 'cover control' model I could find to properly replace my old one.

UPDATE: AFTER a YEAR of USE---It has annoying features:
--Silverware sticks to the magnetic cover as you remove it
--You always need to clean the cover as the openings are too small to let water down as it gets easily clogged with some sink debris
--You always need to shove the big debris down the shute with your hand or a spoon as the plastic flange is so wide in the drain it does not let stuff go down
--OVERALL it is annoying to have to use
--the 20 year old one was better (EASIER TO USE AND LET STUFF DOWN, AND COVER DID NOT GET CLOGGED) but louder

It is VERY QUIET---you can barely hear it when in use!!! The new cover on/off switch will take some getting used to as it the connection is magnetic; the magnetic drain cover sticks to the sink rack when you remove it and is tight in the drain where you need to turn it 90 degrees for ON.

The instructions were not clear on how to install the on/off switch magnet on top of the unit (under the sink). Since the sticker was upside down I had it in wrong first, and of course it did not work.

They neglect to provide the small round electrical wire connector for the wire that was not needed on my 22 year old one. The package does not warn you--all they say is you will need some simple tools... This is the type of connector you screw into a juntion box to hold a wire.

Installed in 2 hours. This new item provides two extra 1.5 inch PVC pipes to allow for some of the size changes over the years.

Customer Review: Expensive, but still a good value

Our previous 3/4 hp In-Sink-Erator finally wore out after 20 years of service. We loved the cover-control on the old model, and I was shocked to find that it's such a rare feature. This high-end unit had it, and I wouldn't have been nearly as happy with wall-switch versions, which we've had in the past. The cover control means you never have to worry about you (or a guest) turning on the disposer when intending to turn on a light. No worries about using an electrical switch with wet hands. Kids are less likely to overload the unit by force-feeding, because the cover is in place when the unit is turned on.

I had never installed a sink disposer before, but I had installed our dishwasher and done similar tasks around the house. Instructions were clear, and I did the whole thing in a couple of hours replacing everything including the drain flange (included with the disposer).

This unit is whisper-quiet, and the 3/4 hp motor never breaks a sweat.

As I said in the title, this one's pretty expensive, but our previous one lasted 20 years and this one seems even sturdier.

May 2010: I am reminded to comment by my mother who just visited to take care of our kids during a trip; on our return, she actually commented on this disposer saying it was among quietest she's used. We constantly feed it eggshells, coffee grounds, asparagus stalks, etc. No maintenance has been necessary.

Customer Review: REALLY quiet! Couldn't be safer.

I got this disposal because it was the only batch feed type I could find that was the right size for my deep, undermount sink to still be above the drain in the wall (needs about 6 1/2" below the sink). This is so quiet you can barely tell its on, and I did accidentally leave it on, not hearing it until I turned off the water. How quiet you ask? Its all relative isn't it. This disposal is about as loud as my electric toothbrush!

Perhaps the rust issue on the magnetic parts mentioned by another reviewer was on an older model, this cover is all heavy plastic, so the magnets must be encased inside. LOVE the cover control (or batch feed as others brands call them). I've been without a disposal for about 6 years, and didn't really miss one too much, but that's only because I had bad ones in the past - loud, clogged easily, safety hazard. If you've not used a cover control/batch model before, it is made so that the water still runs through the cover while the disposal is on, I was originally concerned that you had to stuff the thing with food & water then run. You turn the cover upside down when you want to use it as a stopper. The extra flange mentioned by someone else is only needed for really thick sinks - like a farmhouse sink maybe? I have a Kohler Executive Chef cast iron and no extra parts were needed. This disposal is expensive, but worth every penny for the safety and quiet.

Customer Review: Buyer Beware if Your Sink is Cast Iron
Summary: 3 Stars

I've had insinkerators in my last two homes. Very convenient. When mine broke down, I went with the new model which has a magnetic on/off switch. Seemed very advanced. Also great price on Amazon. Warranteed for 7 years in home. HOWEVER, after it was installed by the plumber, you couldn't get the thing to turn off. Called for service. They agreed to come but said if it isn't the device, they would charge $250 for a service call (as much as I paid for the insinkerator). Called back the plumber. He called service. Apparently, because my white sink is cast iron, it needs a different part to fit in the drain. Service knew the part number without looking it up. The part, which is an inch or so longer than the one that comes with the insinkerator, cost $75! That's one third the price of the whole shebang. Unfortunately I was too far down the road to turn back. Given the additional expense, the fancy magnetic switch and whisper quiet operation have lost some of their luster. At least they could warn you on the box or in the sales info that you could get banged for an additional $75 for a part that looks like it costs about a buck. Talk about money down the drain!

Customer Review: Great Product!
Summary: 5 Stars

The only difficulty I had installing this product was with the length of the sleeve on the sink flange. It was difficult to install the C clamp with the sleeve being so short. They make a longer one but it was not included in the kit. (This was noted in the installation instructions inside the box) I called the company and they offered to ship me one at no charge. It arrived some days later. But, in the interim, I was able to get it installed using the included flange although there was barely enough clearance to install the control magnetic sensor unit. They really should add the longer flange to the kit or at least advertise that the longer flange might be needed on some thicker bottomed sinks.

That issue aside, the unit works great. It's quiet and effective. I highly recommend this product.
