Tools and Hardware Reviews of InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration System

Customer Review: Two time loser
Summary: 2 Stars

Approximately three years ago we replaced an aging hot-water dispenser with the InSinkErator brand and for about a year and a half we had no problems. We came home one afternoon to find water on the floor in front of the sink and we thought the worse - that a pipe had broken. Opening up the cabinet revealed that the InSinkErator had developed a leak and had flooded the bottom of the cabinet with water and it was spilling out onto the floor.

I called InSinkErator and to their credit - after checking the manufacturing date of my dispenser they verified I was still within the warranty period and I chose for them to send a replacement.

So far so good...Until now (~ 1 1/2 years after replacement of 2nd unit)

Not trusting the second unit, I had placed a plastic container below it - *just in case*. The last couple of days the dispenser has been acting a little strange - not immediately dispensing hot water when the faucet is opened for example - little things I missed the first time around, but I notice now. I took a look at the plastic tub under the unit and sure enough there is a brown residue now coating the bottom of that container. Something leaked and subsequently dried so I am just waiting for the unit to fail entirely.

One thing is certain ~ I will not replace it with another InSinkErator. I would give this unit 1 star, but the company's response was a positive so 2 stars it is.

Customer Review: InJunkErator - Built to Fail
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought the Insinkerator SST from my local home improvement store based upon the perceived quality of the brand name; the apparent quality & durability of how it was made; and the nicely finished brushed stainless finish faucet. About 2 years after installing it myself (I consider myself very handy with hand and power tools) I noted water puddling underneath the kitchen sink. Thinking it was a drain or supply pipe leak from the sink, I was very surprised to discover it was coming from my "new" (2 year old) hot water dispenser tank. I removed the tank and completely disassembled it hoping the leak was a simple leaking gasket or loose hose. NOT the case! I opened the tank and found that the metal tube that heated the water had completely corroded away (rusted) in several places! The residual water in the tank was full of rust. After many hours of research on the internet to consider replacing "only" the SST tank (at a cost of over $200) I decided it was a better choice to completely replace my entire dispensing system with another brand. I would NOT buy another InSinkerator H/W dispenser after this catastrophic failure after only 2 years of use. VERY disappointing. Check out other products from Amazon - I especially recommend the Waste King Coronado H/W dispenser with Tank. Less than $150 includes both the tank AND a brushed nickel faucet. Save your money, avoid Insinkerator H/W dispensers especially this SST.

Customer Review: Easy Replacement
Summary: 4 Stars

When our original reservoir tank failed (corrosion, leaking), our plumber recommended replacing the entire assembly (dispenser and all) for over $600 p&l, since the dispenser is not repairable. I called ISE (they were very helpful) and they said that the tank has been redesigned, and could be easily replaced as long as there was enough space (it's larger than the original).

So I purchased this tank from Amazon (it's no longer sold by plumbing houses) and found that tank replacement installation was easier than I feared, after reading some of these reviews. All I had to do was remove the old reservoir and mounting bracket, drill new holes for the new larger mounting bracket, hang the new tank, mate the three poly tubes (no clamps required), restore the water, and plug it in. Total time: about 30 minutes.

Granted, I didn't have to replace the filter. (I use a larger Everpure for the dispenser and fridge.) And I didn't have to replace the dispenser, so there was no messing with the copper tubing that another reviewer complained about. However, my kit included the filter and all of the tubing and adapters I would need if I had to. (I couldn't find the tank sold alone at a lower price.) Also, the instructions were very complete and well-illustrated.

I'm glad I saved another costly plumbing call and can get several more years out of our indispensable water dispenser.

Customer Review: design flaws spoil a good idea
Summary: 3 Stars

After four years use our 2006 model SST leaked and caused damage to the cabinet floor. Being the handy sort I disassembled the unit to see what failed.I discovered that the heating element is welded back to the mounting flange. This allowed the heat to fry the gasket for the" flange to tank to electrical connector". Obviously someone at incinerator isn't thinking. I also found the plastic tube discoloration from heat damage mentioned in other reviews. I was ready to buy a replacement unit when my wife insisted I call Insinkerator. The support person was very professional and helpful. I told her I needed parts and she told me I shouldn't have taken the unit apart. Well what did I have to lose? The warenty was expired. To my amazement she said she would send me a replacement unit for free. "Please discard the old tank unit", she said.
Working in the technology field, I checked out this SST unit. Most of the design and materials are excellent. This unit had all stainless fittings and the construction is good. If the people who choose the gasket material and tubing would do their job better and the designer of the heating element would think about the design a little more, they could have a winner here.
Sell me the parts and I'll fix the old unit instead of filling the ciry dump. As far as the performance of the Instant Heater, it worked great and my wife considers it an absolute necessity.

Customer Review: Not an easy replacement
Summary: 3 Stars

On InSinkErator's (ISE) recommendation, we bought this tank and filter to replace our 5 year old unit that still heated, but whose output was undrinkable - a funny taste due to corrosion of the tank (?). While the replacement tank and filter work fine, it was quite a job to install for this amateur plumber, due to ISE not providing good information or the right fittings. Our old unit used 1/4" copper from the faucet to the supply and to the tank. The new unit uses 3/8" polyethylene tubing. ISE should have known this, since we provided the serial number of the old unit when we called and had this unit recommended, hence only 3 stars. Gory details follow for anyone in the same situation.

The new tank is wider than the old one. So, I had to move the mounting bracket so the new tank did not interfere with the supply valve. When I called to explain the tubing mismatch, ISE sent an adapter for the line from the faucet to the tank (1/4" compression to quick-disconnect). However, the 3/8" to 1/4" Y adapter from the filter leaked when I tried it with 1/4" copper tubing. I ended up getting 2 1/4" to 3/8" compression adapters from Home Depot, which did fine with the copper 1/4" tubing and the plastic 3/8" tubing. Two are needed since the filter goes in between the supply and the faucet. Do-it-yourselfers will also need a compact tubing cutter and some extra 1/4" compression nuts and ferrules.
