Tools and Hardware Reviews of InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration SystemCustomer Review: doesn't work with previous faucets Summary: 2 Stars
I had good luck with the previous version of this product- it lasted for 9 years before rusting out and leaking. This unit was the only one I saw that was sold with just the tank, and since my faucet works fine, I did not want to buy a new one. I purchased this one, and called a plumber to install it-- of course when he arrived, he said that will not work with the faucet because the new ones are all plastic, and the old ones were metal -- I assumed there would be a way to connect them. Since I had the plumber "on the clock" on just had him go get a new faucet and it was about $400 for just the least expensive faucet in basic chrome!! Not installed. Of course the good folks at Amazon sell it for around $250 but even Home Depot sells it for $375. Gotta love Amazon... I just wish I had realized the part about the faucet before wasting all the money.
On the water filter, I already had an everpure filtering system in place, so I skipped the one that comes with the water heater-- looks like that is a good thing as they charge a crazy amount for the replacement filter for the one that comes with this. Looks like they like to get you in the door with the water heater, and then take ya down with the faucet and finish you off with the water filter replacement. Just based on the heater, it looks fine.
Customer Review: Hassle free warranty replacement, plus $25 gift card Summary: 3 Stars
Like many other posters here, I have gone through several ISE instant hot heaters over the last several years. My latest unit failed in less than two years, and after disassembling the heater I found the same defective hose described by Phil Shikuka. I was debating doing the hose fix he described, but since it was still under warranty I decided to call the toll free service number printed on the side of the unit. Much to my surprise, they efficiently handled my call. They asked if I still had my receipt (I didn't), but since the unit was manufactured within the warranty period they were happy to replace it. They offered me two options: either send me a free replacement plus a $25 gift card, or send a service tech to replace it at no charge. They did say that if they send a tech and find no manufacturer's defect that they would charge for the call. For both options they would warranty the replacement unit for the balance of the original warranty period.
I'm pleased that they are clearly taking full responsibility for this defect. I suppose a $25 gift card is a small consolation if the leak damages expensive cabinetry, but in my case there was no damage and I really appreciated their extra effort. They did the right thing, and it turned around my opinion of the company.
Customer Review: Faulty internal hose Summary: 2 Stars
We love the convenience of the instant hot water, but after 16 months the unit started to leak out the bottom. The initial symptom was that there was a short delay between pressing the handle and getting hot water. The delay made me suspicious and I checked the tank under the sink, yep, it was wet.
The customer service was friendly and offered to FedEx a new tank to me if I agreed to do the installation myself. I agreed, since I had already double checked that none of the fittings were leaking, and the source of the water was from inside the unit.
Now that the tank is on the way, I decided to open up the faulty unit to see what was the problem. Well, I found that a plastic tube in the unit had split wide open and from the brown, severely aged look of the tubing, the heat of the tank had made the plastic tubing hard and brittle. Definitely the wrong material selection for this application. Probably switched suppliers without proper testing. I would imagine that EVERY unit with this kind of tubing is going to fail in less that 2 years.
My advice, put a buck under the unit, and if you are handy, take the unit apart after a year or so and inspect the plastic tube to see if it is still in good shape.
Customer Review: If you think plastic fittings are a good idea... Summary: 1 Stars
If you think plastic fittings are a good idea around expensive cabinetry and hardwood floors, this is a the product for you. This model now has two "quick-connect" plastic fittings. My last ISE tank had one, the "Y" fitting connecting the copper pipes to the filter line. It failed after 3 years and soaked the cabinets and hardwood floors to the point of serious damage. Initially I thought I would just replace the "Y" connector, but then I realized that the tank itself showed obvious corrosion. I was determined to buy a different brand, but I was unable to locate a model that would work with the expensive Hot/Cold chrome dispenser/filter unit, so I held my nose and bought this model. It leaked immediately from the now plastic "Snap-Connect Fitting"" which is on the tube carrying the hot water to the dispenser. Yes, believe it or not, the connector on the tubing that carries 190° water is a plastic "Quick-Connect"! And when you call ISE, you'll discover their parts are available only through them. They will get them to you in 7-10 days, and you cannot expedite this by agreeing to pay the shipping costs yourself! If you buy this unit, protect your cabinetry and floors with a water alarm or bucket! I wish I had.
Customer Review: faulty internal hose Summary: 2 Stars
The instant HOT/COLD/FILTERED WATER was the very best feature in our new home in 2003. It was great for tea, hot chocolate, inst coffee etc. We were thrilled by the convenience and efficiency of the appliance.
The problems started before the year was up. The initial tank failed, while under warranty and was replaced by the manufacturer, not once, but twice. The last tank was the 'new'improved, stainless steel tank, installed in May 2007. We were really pleased by it's preformance until we noticed a hesitation in the hot water distribution and found the contents under the counter in a cupboard soaked. It had started leaking from the bottom of the tank where the electrical cord came out of the tank. We shut off the power and H2O and contacted the manuf. We were told it was NOT under warranty.
We decided to dismantle the unit and immediately noticed the plastic tubing, going from the S/S tank to the surface mounted tap, had turned brown from the heat and had become very brittle and had disintegrated, causing the leak.
One would think that for an expensive product like this unit, the manufacturer would use a better grade connection hose that lasted longer than a year.
