Tools and Hardware Reviews of InSinkErator SST-FLTR 2/3-Gallon Stainless Tank and Filtration System

Customer Review: the 3 year upgrade
Summary: 3 Stars

i purchased this as a replacement after 3 years of good use of the original tank. The tank works well and is easy to install but has a design flaw in the plastic material used for the vent internal to the unit. (As an engineer, I had to tear it apart to understand why it failed.) Over time the vent tube will degrade. Based on other reviews, some folks experience leaking. In my case, the smell of ashes permeated the space under the sink where the tank was installed and I knew it wasn't safe to keep using the tank.

Of course, the tank had a 2 year warranty so I ended up purchasing another unit. If you expect this product to be a consumable with a ~3 year lifetime, you should be happy. If you think that expensive tanks should last as least as long as a good house hot water heater then you will be disappointed.

Customer Review: Replacement tank working, expect another two years
Summary: 5 Stars

I had replaced this tank approximately 2 years ago with this new model. It was more difficult that time because of a change in the arrangement of hoses. This switch was a snap - I just unmounted the original tank, unplugged the hoses, and plugged them back into the new tank. I did notice a bit of water leak from one of the hoses on the old tank after I removed it, and I suspect this explains the failure. I suspect it also explains the requirements for a professional installation if the warrantee is to be enforceable. For my purposes, I think it is cheaper to buy a new tank every two years than to pay for professional installation. My original tank was professionally installed, and developed a water leak from a hose anyway. I will try to keep a closer watch on this one and hope to catch any water leak early.

Customer Review: Worked great--until it started leaking
Summary: 2 Stars

Product worked great for a little over a year, until the warranty ran out. Now, after 15 months it has sprung a leak. The warranty is supposed to be 5 years on the "bronze tank"--time will tell whether InSinkErator stands behind the product. I hope that they do, and that they improve the issues that others have reported.

However, between my own experience and that of many other people on the site, I cannot recommend this point-of-use kitchen water heater at all, due to the leak we're now experiencing.
I DO however recommend these things in theory, as having the instant hot water for making coffee, tea or cleaning has been awesome. I want to get this thing fixed or replaced--I love having the feature. Just not the boiling water spilling out underneath my sink.

Customer Review: Great concept, poor product
Summary: 2 Stars

We agree with the many negative reviews of this particular product. After three years our unit sprang a leak and water dripped down to the unit below ours damaging a kitchen light fixture. As has been noted elsewhere, when we opened the unit we found that the piece of plastic tubing running out of the tank was blackened and brittle. My wife, who is very health conscious, who won't even drink cold water from a non BPA free plastic bottle, was horrified. We will try the silicon tubing fix that was mentioned in another review.
In any case, even despite the criminally poor design, we would buy another unit because we're hooked on the convenience of instant hot water. In the future we'll keep a bucket under the heater and check periodically for leaks.

Customer Review: Not as hot as advertised
Summary: 3 Stars

We purchased this because ISE stated that it was "factory set at 200F and can be set up to 210F". My wife loves her tea hot (she's English) and even with the thermostat maxed, the tea is cold enough to drink immediately as the small amount of milk she adds is enough to cool it down to 150 degrees.

Water from our kettle is 204 degrees after pouring it into a mug and set to max the ISE unit is 190. As near as I can tell using a calibrated thermometer the "200F" setting is ~180 and maximum is about 190. The water is hot, just not hot enough.

Also, temp is not consistent, there can be 10 degree variations throughout the day. This is probably normal considering the nature of the unit (tank with a thermostat).
