Tools and Hardware Reviews of Indus-Tool FWXXX Cozy Electric Foot Warming PadCustomer Review: Love it! -Warm, Includes On/Off Switch, No Foul Smell Summary: 4 Stars
I was a little hesitant to buy this due to the reviews that said it has a bad odor, but I figured I would return it if it smelled. More recent reviews said that the company switched materials and that it no longer smells. When I opened it, I didn't notice any significant odor. I put it right up to my nose and it smelled like a brand new work boot. Plugged it in and left it on for a few hours - still no odor. I've been using it at work for a week now and there isn't any odor.
Also in older reviews, it was said that the warming mat did not come with an On/Off switch, but it does have one on the cord with a light that glows orange when set to 'on' so you can easily tell whether it's on or off. Not sure if that is something new that was added. You cannot adjust the temperature as it is self-regulated, but if my feet get too warm, I just move them off the mat for a few minutes.
Overall, I'm really enjoying this mat. Not only does it keep my feet warm, but it warms the whole area under my desk just enough. Space heaters tend to get too hot and dry out the air(and my skin!), but this warmer is perfect if your office is just a little too cold for your liking. Definitely a great buy for the price too!
Customer Review: Great way to save energy - updated Summary: 4 Stars
I bought two of these in 2003 because we keep our house fairly cool in winter and we work from a home office. We put one under each desk and attached a lamp dimmer (from Lampsplus) so we could run it at reduced power. At full power, it gets too warm for me. At about 30% power it keeps my feet nice and warm and we hardly notice an odor after the first days after bringing them in the house. After the first winter I had my mother buy one as a gift for my brother who works in a cool basement office and he likes his too. I think some people are more sensitive to the smell and some of the pads must smell more than others because it just hasn't been a problem with the two I bought in 2004.
** March 2007 - It was a colder winter here than the last 5 years. Our 2 outdoor dogs *really* enjoyed sleeping in the garage on the below freezing nights as we set up 2 of these pads hooked to lamp dimmers which were set on low to medium (full power is too hot). In the mornings one of the dogs didn't even want to be let out. If you have dogs that chew on cords, these pads are not suitable, but they worked for us. Of course, then I'd have to sweep the pad really good so I could use it in the office after the dogs were out.
Customer Review: DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this mat 4 months ago (9/05) and I've done all the research. The real manufacturer is a company called Bird-X, Inc. (a maker of bird repellents) and Idus-Tool buys this product from Bird-X; it's designed for germination of seeds (to keep them warm).
I called Idus-Tool and they said to clean the "coating" (which is sprayed on the mat to keep it shinny). I scrubbed it with an industrial cleaner, removed all the shinny stuff, and the mat still smells of rubber (aka Skunk Smell).
I gave the review a 2 star, because it does work, but unless you have NO sense of smell, you will feel sick from the odor the warmed rubber gives off, unless you open the windows (which defeats the purpose of the warmer).
The product that I'm now buying to replace this mat is: Cozy Toes Portable Foot Warmer by Indus-Tool which is being sold by Air Purifier World (why them, I have no idea). The total cost, including shipping & the Hi-Lo switch) is $74.00 and more than I paid for this one, but I can no longer stand the smell.
Take this review to heart. I have no axe to grind, only cold feet and a nose which is offended by the smell of this mat.
Customer Review: Smells like a skunk, but keeps your toes warm for pennies Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased the Indus foot warmer for my home office. I was very impressed by the low energy usage it required. It was so low that it required about half of the energy as many of my computer hardward power adapters in my office, which was the one positive thing I found with the product. The big negitive issue was the smell.I plugged the product in my office and shortly there after realized it smelled really bad. I moved it out of my home office and plugged it in out in my shop. A week later I went out was overwhelmed by the smell in my shop. It smelled like a skunk had been living in the shop. I was very happy that I didn't have it in my home during that initial break-in period. After smelling the smell and determining that after a week it was still very stinky, I opted not to keep it. Almost a month later, I'm still overcome by the smell that it left in my shop. It might be ok to use this product for some applications, but I wouldn't use it in a home or small office. If the smell is supposed to clear up after a week of use, I don't understand why the manufacturer/distributer doesn't break them in for us. I don't believe that it does clear up completely.
Customer Review: A Fair Review... Summary: 4 Stars
Let me preface by saying that I have exceptionally cold feet. Even in the summer.
First off, this thing does not smell so bad. It has a faint scent of rubber, and does NOT "stink up the room" or anything. I'm using it right now, and can smell it, but it's slight. Then again, I never found the smell of rubber repugnant.
The unit does not put out an enormous amount of heat. However, if you keep your feet on it for an hour+, yes it keeps/gets them warm. While it's not nearly as effective as a space heater on your feet at full-blast, at 90W (compared to 1500W with space heater @ full blast), this mat delivers FAR more than 1/16th the overall warmth and comfort. I'd say it provides 1/2 the heat and comfort of a heater on full-blast, which is very impressive for 90W.
This is quite the bargain. If you use space heaters on your feet like I do everyday, you'll save the $30 in a matter of a month or so. It is safe, low profile, and you don't have to move it -- keep it stationary at your computer desk. The low wattage is the key to the praise, here. In a perfect world, this pad would put out more heat -- but I'm satisfied at 90W.
