Tools and Hardware Reviews of Indus-Tool FWXXX Cozy Electric Foot Warming PadCustomer Review: Smells like burning tires Summary: 2 Stars
I got this for my wife, and was really looking forward to it. We have different "temperature preferences", and she spends much of her time at home complaining about being too cold. That, or I complain about being too hot.Anyhow, the Indus does warm up. In fact, it gets downright hot -- you need socks or something else between you and it once it's going at full tilt. It's a very effective foot warmer. But then there's the smell. Once it gets warmed up, it gives off a powerful smell of hot rubber. The smell doesn't go away very fast once it's turned off, either. In fact, I had to wash the comforter that we'd had over the Indus repeatedly to get rid of the burning rubber smell. The house still smells faintly of hot rubber, and it's been days since we used it. If I had no sense of smell, I'd love the Indus. Unfortunately, as it is, we can't use it. With luck, perhaps Indus can find a material to use that won't react this way upon heating.
Customer Review: NO SMELL - works great Summary: 4 Stars
One of the reasons I love Amazon is because of the customer reviews. I enjoy researching a product and making informed decisions. The reviews of this product scared me to death. I put it in my cart and removed it several times. After spending a few days researching every foot warmer on the web I kept coming back to this product, it was exactly what I was looking for. I went ahead and bought it.
It's perfect. NO SMELL. Not even a hint of rubber odor. It's not too hot. I have it under my computer desk and I spend a lot of time at the computer. I gave if 4 stars because it does not have a switch. My power outlet is under my desk and I didn't want to crawl under the desk to plug and unplug it. I rigged it up with a short extension cord that has a switch and hung it from the end of my desk. Problem solved! Now it's easy on and easy off.
Perhaps I have a new and improved version, the other worst reviews are a few years old.
Customer Review: Not a bad pad Summary: 4 Stars
First off, after reading all the discussion about odor - yes, right out of the box it smells like a new tire. But, it's covered with an oily film and if you wash that off (with dish soap in the kitchen sink), you barely notice anything. Even without a "burning in" period.
About the heating - yes it is VERY warm. Too much so for socks alone. Trouble is warming your whole foot evenly; it tends to roast the bottoms of your feet while the tops stay frozen. I've got a pair of boots I wear with soles that let the heat through and insulate the tops pretty well, so I got lucky. But otherwise I'm flipping shoes over to warm their tops for a while and then putting them on....or putting my feet UNDER the pad for a while...
Bottom line is it really is warm, doesn't smell bad and uses very little electricity.
And yeah I ordered it from Amazon. If you can live with killing Mom and Pop's livelihood, go for it.
Customer Review: No smell problem, silent, steady heat Summary: 4 Stars
I'd been wanting to try one of these for a year now but was put off by the price and comments on smell. After buying one on sale, I plugged it in in the laundry room for a couple of days. Couldn't smell anything. So I took it to work and ran it for 8 hours (with the AC jacked up high because it's summer). No smell and great warmth on my feet. I think it's a winner.
Update - I've been using this in my office for 8 months now and consider it a clear winner. It raises the temperature under my desk 9 degrees and only smells briefly when you lift it off the ground. Our technology crew is recommending it to other cold-natured employees because it doesn't blow fuses and present a fire risk.
I ordered a second one and placed it on the laundry room floor under the dog's bed. I can leave it on all the time without fear of it overheating or catching his bed on fire. The problem is that the cats want one, too.
Customer Review: BEWARE of this product! Summary: 1 Stars
This is the worst product I've ever purchased. The unit, whenever plugged in and used, gives off the most horrible petro-chemical-solvent based fumes I've ever encountered. No one in our household can tolerate the intense fumes, which permeate the entire house within 30 minutes of use causing burning eyes and throat, and intense headaches. Hoping that these odors would subside with time and usage, we plugged the pad in out in the garage and let it "season" 24hrs/day for a bit over 3 weeks. Tried it inside again, with the same results as before. Even after a month of aging, the solvent odors are intolerable. I am discarding it, as the health risks to anyone breathing these vapors are unacceptible. To those reviewers who stated they noticed no odors, you must have received a unit manufactured by some other vendor, as this made-in-China heating mat is the most unacceptable -- and dangerous -- consumer product I've ever seen.
