This timer will turn a light (appliance) on or off at either a preset time or at dusk or dawn. For example, the timer can be programmed to turn on a living room lamp at dusk and off at, say, midnight. It can then turn the lamp on the next morning at 5AM and off at sunrise. Each on or off event is programmed separately.
The unit does not use a photocell but has an internal chip that knows dusk/dawn/daylight savings for your specific location, which gives it more flexibility.
Programming your location and the events takes some time, but the instructions are clear. Two button cells provide backup power to keep the display working in the event of a power failure, but even if the batteries die the programming is not lost.
Works as claimed.

I've had my for about a month now and it works great. I have a heater at work because our office is freezing but I didn't want to take a chance of leaving it on over night or over a weekend. This timer has a setting for Monday through Friday so I set the start time the end time plugged it in and that's it. I never have to worry about it. It has a battery back up so you don't have to lay on the floor to set the thing and you can move it to a different plug without losing the time or your settings.Customer Review: Works great - NOT hard to program!

I bought three of these to control my Christmas lights. For years I have been frustrated with light controllers that either broke under any load, or were rotary and inaccurate. A lot of reviewers commented about how hard it was to program these controllers (not intuitive, etc.). While it is not quite as easy to use as an iPod, if you follow the directions it is very straightfoward. I quickly had all three of my timers programmed and sync'd up. Every evening, all three light sections would come on within seconds of each other, and they would all go off within seconds. The feature that accounts for the time of sunset is very cool - I used that as the turn-on time.
The only negative of these timers is that you need to keep them plugged in to avoid draining the batteries. If you store them for the year, you'll need to pull the batteries out so that they will still be alive next December - and then you'll have to repeat some of the programming. They don't use a lot of electricity, so I think I'll just keep them plugged in all year (with no load).
