Tools and Hardware Reviews of Intermatic EJ500C Indoor Digital Wall Switch Timer

Customer Review: Good Product - CFC issues expected
Summary: 4 Stars

I have had this product for several years and I too have experienced problems with using it with CFC. At first it was a bit concerning when the CFC would flash when the switch was off. I also found that if at least one of the lights in the circuit was not CFC then everything was okay. I thought about it for a minute and realized that the issue depended upon which way power was provided to the lights. If the power was through the switch, then you would not see any issues with using just CFCs, but if the power comes through the light first (which is legal - ie. Code) then you would see some problems.

The only complaint I have is that with the change in when daylight savings starts now, there was no way to update the unit to know that.

Customer Review: Poorly designed human interface
Summary: 1 Stars

While the Intermatic EJ500 apparently does what it claims, including adjusting for different day lengths in different regions, it is extremely difficult to set it correctly. Instructions are poorly written and confusing. Trying to read the LCD when it's on the wall is a terrible frustration, given the small size of the text, lack of backlighting, and confusing designations. What's worse, the timer's control system was designed to be used by electrical engineers, not average humans. My wife and I have puzzled over this timer three times at least, and we remain uncertain whether it will do what we want. Why not create a simple on-screen menu system, like the kind most up to date remote controls have? It's simply shoddy and outmoded design.

Customer Review: What the product deescription doesn't tell you...
Summary: 2 Stars

The EJ500C appears to be a versatile and well designed product, but maybe not for everybody. Here are three features which may not please you:
1. I wanted to control a very efficient set of low wattage lights. Too bad, it requires at least 40 watts of incandescent bulbs, and you cannot connect compact fluorescents (CFL's).
2. The switch body is deeper than the previous timer, so it will not fit in my standard 2x4" electrical box. It hits the conduit bushings at top and bottom.
3. If you are under 40 with great eyesight, and you mount the switch in a well-lit location, great. But otherwise, forget about reading the extremely small and dim numbers and words on the screen without a lighted magnifying glass.

Customer Review: GREAT TIMER - SET IT & FORGET IT!
Summary: 5 Stars

I (a woman in my early 60's) ordered this to replace a broken wall switch timer to control two overhead porch lights and a pole lamp. We have an older home and the switch boxes are smaller. This timer fit in the box perfectly; and because it only has three wires to connect and the instructions were very simple to follow, I installed it very easily and quickly. (OF COURSE: TURN THE BREAKER OFF!) The instructions to set it up were very straight forward and if you follow them, it's ready for the self-adjusting setting.

I then replaced my regular 40W bulbs with CFL's and it still works perfectly! They've been in for about three months - no problems. Better yet, my electric bill went down almost $10!

Customer Review: Great timer !
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought (and installed) this timer for a neighbor and I did it with confidence given that I have two of my own. It's a great design with compact form factor and very flexible.

The following are some things to consider:

- the programming can be a little complex for the faint of heart but if you just follow the directions you can do it. And once it's done once you should never have to touch it

- the letters on the display are tiny so get out your headlamp and glasses - but except for programming it you really never have to look at the display

I love this product and the Amazon price can't be beat and even the shipping is not too bad.
