Customer Review: not for Christmas lights! otherwise - great!

I bought two of these from a local big box hardware store. One for the normal porch lights and one for the dedicated circuit for Christmas lights. The porch light unit works GREAT! Running for over a month with no worries and adjusts automatically each day with the sunset.
The Intermatic web site FAQs specifically list NOT for Christmas lights, but the install materials with the switch say nothing about this! I wired up the C9 normal lights today and at the appointed sunset time - light came on for less than 2 min, then the switch overheated and gone. Now I have to buy a new switch rated at least at 20 amps! Wish I had known this up front and would have saved time and money.

I had a prior version that did not have the auto-adjust function. I loved that too, having the lights on when you want them without effort is great, but needing to adjust as the daylight changed was a bit of a guessing game. This one that adjusts by your area is perfect. Install it and forget about it, the lights are on when they need be and off when not, You can still set the relative on off times or do manual if you want. Easy to use and a great value. I highly recommend if you want your outside lights on at the proper time without any hassle at all.
Also, works well with CFC bulbs, so that makes things even easier as they last so long.

This switch cannot be used with compact fluorescent lights (CFs or CFLs). Some of you might think it's severe to give a switch 1 star just becuase of that, but do the math: it would actually save you more than 50% on your electric bill to leave a CF bulb on 24 hours a day than to used this switch with a 19th century incandescent bulb!!!
For 100W equivalent over one day:
24h * 23W = 0.552kWh for CF
12h (average) * 100W = 1.200kWh (average) for incandescent
Save you money: don't buy this switch and leave your lights on all day. Or better yet, buy a Swylite LST100 which does work with CF lights.

I purchased this unit to replace an older Intermatic unit that stopped working. The old unit used one AAA battery that I was replacing once a month (though the literature said it should last a year). The new unit uses a series of three watch batteries that are only needed in the event of a power outage. Nice, but it seems strange to me that I'd have a battery backup to power the timer when it's likely that the power will be out to the items it's controlling... Anyway, the unit installed simply and flush mounts to the wall -- nothing sticks out. It works great and I don't have to replace the batteries all the time. The astrological feature is superb! It adjusts to the changing time of the setting sun according to the location you live without a photoelectric mechanism. This feature a big plus since I no longer have keep adjusting the time during the changing seasons and daylight savings time. I owned the mechanical version of this timer a few years back but it tends to lasts about 2-3 years and I constantly have to reset the time. Because its digital, there are no moving parts, reliability is big improvement. It blends in beautifully with the Decora and Lutron Maestro dimmers I have thoughout my home. A bit complicated to program though.
