I just programmed and installed the "Intermatic ST01AC Heavy Duty In-Wall Timer" this weekend (11/20/2010) and it's working great so far. The instructions for programming the device was a bit lengthy and intimidating at first but once you 'Read the Entire' page first before you click thru the buttons, it was easy to understand what each feature and button does.
The digital feature make it simple to set time, date, continental region and dusk/dawn. With that said, the Astronomical and DST feature with multiple ON/OFF capabilites are just a delight. You can set ON/OFF times for each day or you can just set the ON/OFF for dusk/dawn or weekdays and weekends and it will adjust with the change in time (spring/fall) as well as adjust for increasing/decreasing daylight. When spring transitions to summer you have increasing daylight so your dusk/dawn time changes automatically. I've set the timer for dusk/dawn so that it turns ON/OFF at the appropriate darkness/lightness.
Set it once, and forget it. Oh, don't even worry about the 4-wires if you have an older 2-wire setup, the red was not required and I couldn't attach the green-ground wire on the tiny switch box; I'm not concerned about it shorting as I'm not expecting it to draw alot of power. AND IT ALSO WORKS WITH CFL's!!!
Here's my update after only 2 months use (Jan 2011). The 'BATT' on the display came on and it did not retained the program for ON/OFF as the light stayed on. I proceeded to replace the battery thinking this would resolve the issue, resetting and checking time, date, and program but to no such luck. The light was on when I left the garage....only later in the evening when I woke up at 3AM to see the light was out. I assume my programming was wrong so today I looked at the display and its blinking partial numbers and letters...the light did not come on at 5:15PM as set. Replaced the new battery with another battery and the same thing, crazy blinking display characters....sort of like the timer device on the Predator's arm counting down to self-destruct. I think I managed to use the manual setting to turn it on. Anyone else with this issue? Oh, I thought it maybe the weather that's affecting the device but it's not that cold in Oregon. I've re-rated with a one star.
