Customer Review: Good enough when they work, but quality control is lacking!

I bought two sets of these from Amazon when they were last on sale for $39, and at that price these are pretty decent little lights - if they work. One of the two sets I received had a defective solar panel, and while Intermatic (Malibu) replaced it, the process was annoying. There's a number to call for replacement parts, but it's only active at certain hours and if you call outside those hours they direct you to a website that is not working! Their regular website directs you to the phone number.
All that aside, these lights are essentially like fat little flashlights that you stick into the ground. A reflector directs the light back down toward the base. Each light has two LEDs in it, and when the batteries are fully charged they put out enough light to mark the edge of a path or driveway -- but they are not suitable for wide area illumination. As others have noted, the batteries supplied with the set are pretty wimpy; they last only a few hours into the night. But for about $2 each you can get better batteries (2000+ MAH) to replace them. Also, the tip about lining the cylinders with something shiny is a good one; it will boost the light output noticeably.
So, overall, I'd give these lights three stars - four if you get a set with no problems. Wait for them to go on sale again!
