Tools and Hardware Reviews of JDS Company 14040 Dust-Force 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,250 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 110/220-Volt Pre-Wired 110-Volt

Customer Review: Great Value
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm an amateur DIY'er and I've had this dust collector for almost 2 years now.

My workshop is a tiny 11 x 17 indoor room with concrete flooring. I've run Woodstock International H1053 4" x 20' Clear Hose (without grounding straps) around the room to a Woodstock International G1571 4" Aluminum Blast Gate at each tool. I use the following tools, one at a time: router, drill press, table saw, miter saw, and sanding table (made by attaching a Woodstock International G1840 Floor Sweep under a table and inlaying a small piece of peg board on top). I made a stand for the miter saw using the same floor sweep, and using a Y to connect to its dust port at the top. I also use a cheap 5-gallon separator and some 2.5" hose (with an adapter to use my shop vac tools) as the primary shop/chip vac. This cuts down a lot on bag changes. I've probably spent as much money on tubing and connectors/gates/adapters, as I have on this unit. I have this wired into a room-dedicated 120v 20-amp circuit, and run it at the same time as my table saw (though I don't start both at the same time). I created a remote-mount switch using some romex I had lying around since the switch on the unit is hard for me to get to (I have work benches sandwiching it into a corner).

I agree with most of the reviewers here; this shop vac was the best value for the money. I got in on sale through Amazon (and got free shipping too). I didn't have any problems with shipping or assembly. Some things that I would add:

Noise:
This isn't a criticism, just an observation. People have commented that this unit is quiet. I guess this is a relative term, but this unit seems loud to me. It's probably because I work within 8 feet of it at all times and my shop is very small. It's about as loud as my table saw and shop vac and you can certainly hear it outside of the house when I turn it on. I expected this and I'm OK with it.

Airflow:
I have no experience with other dust collectors, and I can't tell you what CFM I get at each tool. However, I've kept my runs as short as possible (with gentle curves, small angles, etc) and I also isolate each tool using gates. To me, it pulls a lot of airflow at the 4" connections. I think the weak link in most amateur-grade tools (like my $450 table saw) is the quality of the dust-collection. I have spent a lot of time tweaking each tool, sealing off air leaks, add hoods, scoops, etc. Obviously by the time this gets to the 2.5" or smaller sized connection (I kept these runs as short as possible, 1-2 feet, sometimes I go from 4" to 1" in less than a foot) it reduces the suction. Using the cheap 5 gallon separator (add some window strip insulation to the top of the bucket) is about as powerful as my shop vac, with the added bonus of not changing a clogging filter/full bag and freeing up the shop vac for other uses.

Air Quality / Dust:
I don't really have a concept of what 1 micron or 2 micron particles are so I don't really know if this is truly a 1 micron unit. Another reviewer mentioned the JDS 16002 1-Micron Canister Kit for Dust-Force Dust Collector (supposedly provides more air-flow), and questioned why would they offer the add-on if these units are already at 1 micron. I can say that, working this close to the unit, I still need use a dust mask. It will leave a fine spray of dust (maybe finer than sifted flour) about 2 feet around the base of the unit. This might only happen on startup (it will do the same if you disturb the bag while the unit runs). The whole reason for me writing this review is because I've come back to see if the 1" micron canister is worth the extra purchase or if I need to buy a dedicated shop air cleaner. Neither seem like very inexpensive solutions, although I guess a new pair of lungs is pretty expensive too.

Overall a great unit and I would certainly buy it again.

Description of JDS Company 14040 Dust-Force 1-1/2-Horsepower 1,250 CFM Vertical Bag Dust Collector, 110/220-Volt Pre-Wired 110-Volt

Tired of making do with your wet/dry shop vacuum? We don?t blame you. Step up to this JDS collection system make all the sawdust you want. After the initial setup (which is a little tedious but not taxing), it?s all but maintenance-free; just empty the bag when it?s full.

This unit moves 1,250 cubic feet of air every minute ? that?s equivalent to exchanging all the air in a room that?s 12 by 13 feet with 8-foot ceilings in 60 seconds. That?s pretty impressive. The top bag filters particles down to 1 micron ? one millionth of a meter ? keeping your shop air clean and clear. On the bottom is a replaceable clear plastic bag that lets you see exactly how much is in your collector, and we like the choice of either throwing the bag away with the contents or emptying it out and reusing it. It?s got a 42-gallon capacity, so unless you?re making chips eight hours a day, it likely won?t need emptying too often. We?d recommend not letting it get full, though, because 42 gallons of sawdust is no picnic to lift.

The motor is wired for 110-volt service, a standard household outlet, but it?s easily rewired for 220 volts, depending on your shop setup. It?s got an abundance of power for running one tool at a time, even a planer, but it?s probably not sufficient for more than that. The casters make the unit really mobile, so you can roll it around your shop and connect it to whatever tool you?re using, but the casters could be beefier, we thought. We think you?ll find, though, that after you use this collector for a while, you?ll want to build a system with blast gates and a remote for the unit. It?s a natural progression for tool hounds.

The woodworker who finally ditches the shop vacuum and brings in this JDS collector will wonder why s/he didn?t do it sooner. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste
