Tools and Hardware Reviews of Lux Products ELV4-005 Programmable Thermostat for Radiant HeatCustomer Review: The Lux ELV1 Programmable Thermostats are Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased nine Lux ELV1 Programmable Thermostats last September for my 240v radiant ceiling/baseboard heat. My 2000 square foot home was built in the late 1960s and had the original, very inaccurate thermostats. After six months of use, I have to say these thermostats are great!
First of all, my electric level billing is now under $150 a month...that includes my electric heat and air conditioning in Ohio! Since my heating is controlled in each room, I can manage the temperature based on my daily needs, hence lower usage. For rooms I plan to be in, I have it set at 72, so I am not freezing myself out. For rooms I need to turn up the heat unexpectedly, I just push the up button...kind of like turning on a space heater.
The installation was fairly easy...pretty much like replacing a light switch or outlet. The setup and adjustments are very easy and the recent time change only took a couple of minutes to update all nine units.
It did take a few days to get the temperature and time setting right as the radiant heat is slow to respond and the temperature reading is a little different that a forced air heating setting. About the only thing that I do notice about all of these is that it does have a loud click when it turns on and off. It is not loud enough to wake me up but it is noticeable, especially when a couple of them turn on/off a the same time.
It was worth the cost to replace nine of my thermostats with these.
Customer Review: Excellent ergonomics Summary: 5 Stars
I was looking for a replacement programmable line-voltage thermostat, and stumbled upon this one. Its price did seem unexpectedly low, but I figured I'd take a chance on it anyway.
I've since found the unit very well constructed, quite accurate, and the absolute simplest unit to program of any in my experience.
One nice little "extra" feature is the electronic control module can be simply unclipped from the wall mounted base so that one can relax in one's recliner to program it. Programming couldn't be simpler, and it does provide weekday and weekend programs with up to four temperature shifts per day.
Installation is utterly simple, as it mounts and wires just like the basic cheap bi-metallic thermostats, but is MUCH better at controlling temperatures. Temporary overrides of the programmed temperatures is as simple as changing the set temperature with the "UP" and "DOWN" buttons, and the unit will use that new temperature until the next programmed change (you can also tell it to hold any temperature until you say otherwise, for example if you go on vacation).
The two "AA" batteries the electronics run on need to be replaced about once a year, which should be the only "maintenance" this unit requires.
Excellent product.
Customer Review: Easy to Install Power Saver Thermostat Summary: 5 Stars
This is an all around great product. I wish I had known about it before this. Finally, an accurate control for electric baseboard heat. In these times of financial difficulties, this thermostat is the answer to lowering your electric heating bills. An accurate, programmable, thermostat for your electric baseboard heat.
This thermostat is all around user friendly from installation through programming. This is the first thermostat I have ever changed and got it right the first time around. The only thing I had to do that wasn't included with this thermostat was look up the wiring diagram for the old thermostat. The most important thing about the installation is make sure you turn off all power to the heater before you remove the old thermostat. The rest is a simple matter of following instructions. Have the thermostat changed and programmed in less than an hour. Mine has been working like a champ for a couple of weeks now. I plan to buy another one for my master bathroom.
Customer Review: a couple of concerns Summary: 3 Stars
The item looked fine.
There are a couple of things you need to consider. This product is rated for 15 Amps maximum and my baseboard heater runs at 21 Amps.
Also, when I opened up current thermostat, there was no easy way to figure out which wire (both the same color) was the one that went to the box and the one that went to the heater. When I used a current checker I had to put one end into a ground (bathroom outlet next to the thermostat) and the end on to each wire to find the hot wire. Not sure if this is the correct way to determine it, but that was all I could come up with.
I would have loved to use this item, and they should report the amps. I know it doesn't make sense to write a review on something I didn't try, but think about the hassle and money I saved you when I was out the restocking fee.
Customer Review: Only one that works with my basic heating. Summary: 5 Stars
This was a great find. They do not sell anything like it at Home Depot or Lowe's like this. I have tried but they just don't make these for my heating situation. I had forced air wall heaters in each room of my condo, each with a separate thermostat. My old thermostats just had a temperature control that was so inaccurate, the rage was +/- 10 degrees. (Cheap mechanical thermostats.) The ELV1's are amazing. I have been waiting a long time to find a product like this. I have saved so much money since this thing is programmable. On and off whenever you want. Weekdays and weekends with different programs and I can control each room to exact temps. I guess in the scheme of things this is just a programmable thermostat but, show me another that will work with basic wall heaters.
