Tools and Hardware Reviews of Jiffy Steamer J-4000 Pro-Line Commercial Garment Steamer

Customer Review: Add a Little Jiffy To Your Life
Summary: 4 Stars

The Jiffy Pro-Line J-4000 pretty much does everything it promises. It's a high-quality piece of equipment, which is obvious from its old-school retro-1940's bullet-proof design. Obviously no one has spent much time re-designing this product for 50 years or so, nor should they. It's almost a piece of Americana.

No, the Jiffy will not replace ironing; unless, perhaps you are a college student or a spandex-clad stay at home mom, or maybe a shut-it. You can't pull a wrinkled mess out of the clothes hamper and steam it to crisp perfection. What you can do, however, is take the days wear and light wrinkles out of suits, dress slacks and cotton shirts quickly and with ease.

The Jiffy will cut your dry cleaning bill in half or less. And, as dry cleaning is incredibly hard on your clothes, it will extend the useful life of your wardrobe.

I wear expensive bespoke suits and custom shirts. Being able to freshen them up and restore them to ready-to-wear status without a damaging trip to the dry cleaners is very pleasant.

The only unfortunate thing is that the device takes a good 20 minutes to warm up and create steam. Even if you leave it on "pre-heat" it takes six or seven minutes, not the two to three that are billed.

However, once it is going it produces billows of hot steam that will do the job.

I would recommend that you get the available "steaming board". Trying to steam things that are just flopping around on a hanger is awkward. Or, it works fine if you can just hang the clothes up against a wall.

Overall; this is a great high-quality product that does at least as well as the manufacturer claims,

Customer Review: My favorite new toy!

If you have thought of buying a high quality garment steamer, this is the one to get. There are a few things that aren't clear from the description that I thought I'd share. First, the reservoir can hold more than a gallon of water, and I wasn't sure how long it would take to be "ready" to steam - well, if you fill the reservoir completely, it takes about 15 minutes to heat up the water to be ready. The steam is HOT and continuously pumps out of the steamhead, until you turn the machine off, or on standby. And the reservoir holds enough water to continuously steam for about 2 hours. Don't think that you will be able to steam up your clothes each morning before you go to work, because of the impracticality of heating up the water for 15 minutes first (I suppose you could, but that wouldn't be a very environmentally-friendly usage of this great tool). What I did this weekend was spent about 45 minutes steaming just about everything in my closet that had the slightest wrinkle to it. I think this is the first time in my life I don't have anything in my closet that is wrinkled! This machine is going to save me a ton in dry cleaning bills because about half the time, my dry-clean-only clothes aren't exactly dirty, just wrinkled. But the steam also removes odors - I noticed this when I was steaming my draperies - the steam released a dusty/musty smell from the drapes while I was steaming them. Anyway, bottom line, this is a good buy. Easy to assemble and definitely a quality work horse. One down side is that it does have a rather large "footprint" so you will need a little space in your closet or laundry room to keep it handy and ready to rock. Good luck and enjoy!

Customer Review: Not worth the money

If you are looking for a nice ironed look, this does NOT provide that. I ordered this last year (delayed review) the first was broken, of course Amazon exchanged it without any problems, a few weeks later I got the second steamer, again broken. Since I was desperately looking for a good steamer (I had heard they were great but never owned one), I send the second back in exchange for a third one. Finally I got one that seemed intact and steam was coming out of it, so very excited I started to steam my business clothes. In a few short minutes I realized that I would never get the ironed business look that I was looking for. Now this may be my fault and my ignorance for not knowing this, so I guess I set myself up for disappointment, but I expected more. It also occurred to me how difficult this was to do without a steaming board, I am sure after a little bit of practice I would have gotten the hang of it with or without the steaming board but in my opinion the board would be very helpful and I would have ordered had the steamer not stopped working after the first 30 minutes. Initially I thought it had overheated, so I unplugged it and tried again the next day. Nothing. I tried everything that it said in the manual (Troubleshooting), still NOTHING. I tried again and again (I guess I refused to believe that I would get a broken item 3 times in a row), but after 1 week I finally decided that this is NOT what I was looking for. The steamer worked ok for the first 30 minute, but even then the clothes were not completely wrinkle free, maybe it's just me, but for this kind of money I expected much more, not to mention that I expected a functioning item.

Customer Review: Buy it but Keep your Iron.
Summary: 4 Stars

I just received my Jiffy Steamer J-4000 Pro-Line. It was missing a funnel which would be no big deal if they had not printed the words "USE ENCLOSED FUNNEL" in caps every where. I sent an email and they said they will send me one (they seem to have a good customer service).

Now that we have dispensed with the whining, lets talk about the product itself. If you need sharp lines on your pants or shirt stick with your iron, this is not for you. However if you would like to take wrinkles out of your clothes and you don't want to bother with hanging them in the bathroom while you take a shower or taking them out of the dryer on time, this does do an amazing job.

I have also purchased a JIFFY personal hand held steamer that works fairly well and provides adequate amount of steam for most of your needs. However if you take wrinkles out frequently and have the space go for J-4000. You get the wrinkles out faster.

If you have a concern about startup time, you do have some control over that. I just put enough cold water in there for a few shirts and it started steaming in 4 minutes. If you put hot water out of the tab and reduce the amount of water you can get even quicker startup time. Or you can put it on standby in the morning before you go to the shower and put it on steam when you are ready to use it. Standby setting uses a thermostat to keeps the water temperature at 90C degrees (close to boiling).

If you can afford it, buy one. It would make a great re-gift item if you find out that you don't like it.

Customer Review: Some design changes would make this much better!

This steamer is the second Jiffy I've owned;having just tried a different brand whose hose melted at the juncture but can't be replaced...
As a senior, the placement of the knob and the writing of "pre-steam" and On and Off is impossible to see and very hard to reach. L.e.d. lighting behind the dial would help, or at least colored, engraved or raised lettering! (Sight is going, and I had to lie on the floor almost to see where to dial it).It takes a long time to heat up the pre-steam. A transparent water level indicator would be nice; this machine may be functional, but too ugly to be sitting out in the laundry room!
Also, the clothes hanger portion is vastly inferior to my last steamer; it has far less capacity, and is too short! Another adjustable section would make it extensible for long dresses or mens' suits. The handle notching may keep the head of the steamer from falling out, but it is awkward to work around. A balanced-placement of room for hangers would help immensely, like a more open "circle 8"? Distilled water would seem to be the way to go to stop some problems written about, maybe caused by mineral deposit accumulation?A drapery pleat steamer/pants creaser attachment with steaming pinchers (like bag clips) would be a real plus. Consider it!
