Customer Review: Decent tester

There has yet to be a perfect battery tester built. There are a lot of interesting concepts on how to come up an all around good design for a decent price but it seems like all of them have some drawback or other. This unit is innovative, attractive, versatile and well built. It fits nicely in your hand for a good grip. The advertising for this unit is poor so I'll fill you in on what is not mentioned. Dimensions: 3.5" X 4.5" X 1". Note that it requires a good AAA battery for operation - ironic isn't it?. It's made in China.
It's a good value at $14 but the one thing I don't like about it is the display. The ad reads "Large easy to read LCD screen" and it is neither. In reality it is a 2" X .25" screen with a 18 bar passive LCD that is inset and requires some good lighting to read. This thing would have been a lot better if there was a colored or lighted display so this was below my expectations.
My recommendation for the best tester I have found so far is a 2" square thing with a flip open Jaw. It has a colorful mechanical meter and a 9 volt tester on the side. There really isn't a brand name - it's just USPATENT D297516. Extremely simple, easy to read, reliable, needs no battery and tests almost any cell - and the best thing is that it sells for a few bucks.
