Tools and Hardware Reviews of Joby Gorillatorch Adjustable and Flexible Tripod Flashlight, GrayCustomer Review: Good, But Disappointing In Some Respects Summary: 3 Stars
This is a great idea that is well implemented - mostly. The standard Gorilla three-legged grips are great, and the magnetic feet have a stronger attraction and holding power than I expected. Where this falls down is the light. It casts a wide, but very uneven beam. It is super bright in the center, but falls off quickly to very little illumination beyond that. As an example; from two feet away, the super bright center is about 2"-3" in diameter. Immediately past that, the output falls by 80-90%. And there is no way to adjust that, something that is common with many flashlights. There is no adjust-ability of the reflector to broaden or tighten the beam. You're stuck with that hot center.
All in all, I'd call it a good attempt marred by lack of one major feature. It's still a potentially great product if that one issue isn't important for you. But the addition of that one adjustment would make it a truly great item.
Customer Review: Room for improvement Summary: 3 Stars
A bendy-legged light should make itself handy. And the Gorillatorch can hold itself in position in some situations. But the product design could be improved.
* The switch has a very light detent so it's easy to accidentally turn the light on and drain the batteries.
* The light focus is too tight for many uses. An adjustable beam would be nice but failing that a wider beam would be more versatile.
* The light and its legs are quite bulky, even when scrunched up.
A good LED headlamp is a much better alternative for the majority of uses this light might serve. I'm a bit of a flashlight gadget nut and would be hard pressed to recommend this light. Perhaps if you often have to open your car's hood and you can frequently use the magnetic feet. Most of the time, I'm having to pull steel tools and hardware from the light so I find the magnets more of an annoyance than a cool feature.
Customer Review: Ingenious little work light! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two of these for Christmas gifts. If I had known when I bought them that they were so useful, I would have bought one for every man in my family and some of the women, too. The magnetic feature on the legs is very useful...and it's powerful, too. The magnets hold on very well. The flexibility of the tripod is also a big plus, because it can be used in tight places, where there are no flat surfaces, and just about anywhere that a light might be needed.
I ended up ordering one extra of these, to keep my nephew from stealing my dad's. And of course, I had to get a different color so there would be no mix-ups. In all, I'd rate this much higher than five stars. The light is powerful (and adjustable), and the whole contraption is amazingly useful.
The design prompted me to purchase the GorillaMobile for my cameras, video cameras, and phones. And I love it, too!
Customer Review: Hardest thing about this is keeping it! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this flashlight on a whim one day, not thinking at all about how I would use it. It immediately became clear that this was the best flashlight I've ever had. I'm used to having to maneuver with a large Maglight whenever I need a flashlight. Having both my hands free has been wonderful. If you're wondering whether you'll ever use this flashlight, here are some things I've used this for where it's been significantly better than using a regular flashlight: crawling behind the Christmas tree to change a fuse, replacing components in a desktop pc, and rewiring a doorbell. Being able to shine the light directly on the work area without having to hold it in place has been great, and the magnetic feet were particularly helpful when working on the computer. Those magnetic feet are also great because you can keep the flashlight stuck to your refrigerator and you'll always know where it is.
Customer Review: Works great, makes a great gift for hands-on people Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased two of these flashlights, one for myself and one as a gift. First thing you'll notice is that the construction feels very solid - you're not going to break it just by using it. Only part that feels a bit cheap is the battery door, but it works fine and should not be a problem. The legs are what you'd expect from a Joby product - fully articulatable and they stay put. Even better, though, the feet are magnetic, which is fantastic. They are pretty strong too, more than enough to hold the flashlight without it moving much.
Finding everyday uses for the flashlight was a little harder than expected, but it's very useful for anything where you need both hands. The days of holding a flashlight with your mouth are over! Plumbing, wiring, car repairs, etc... you can find a use for this flashlight for just about anything.
