Tools and Hardware Reviews of Fuller Tool 301-1950 3-Piece PRO Heavy Duty Wood Chisel SetCustomer Review: fairly priced, better than average steel Summary: 5 Stars
THE STEEL IS GOOD...
These are much better than most of the brand-name import chisels. The steel is better than the average chrome-vanadium junk we see from Chinese manufacturers in all the big-box home-stores. Though it is not particularly hard, (Rc 58) it has a finer grain-structure, so it takes a keen edge and will hold that edge long enough to mortise some door hinges, trim a few joints or chop a few dovetails.
REGRINDING FOR SPECIAL USES...
I have a number of cheap chisels like these that I re-grind to various skews, shapes and profiles for special jobs. I would feel guilty regrinding an expensive chisel, and feel it would be sinful to radically alter a handmade Japanese chisel. So I buy cheapos and regrind them. These are soft enough that regrinding and sharpening is fast and easy, but they take a .5 micron edge and hold that edge amazingly well.
SIZE...
Professional cabinet makers and tool-snobs seem to favor longer blades and handles, but in most cases shorter chisels are easier to place, hold and strike accurately. There ARE certain paring cuts where extra leverage from longer-chisels is an advantage, but these are obviously not fine paring-chisels. The steel caps are for striking. Also, there is enough steel in these blades to last a lifetime or two. At this price, you can buy FIVE (or more) of these for the price of ONE superb American chisel. So the shorter length of these is no problem in my opinion.
COMPARISON...
The grain structure is no where near as fine as blades from A2 steel or as durable as Hitachi-HSS, but it is no where near as expensive either. These are plenty good enough for DIY-guys and gals. You will just have to sharpen them a little more often.
OVERALL...
Like all chisels in this price range, the backs must be flattened and the bevels honed before they perform well. I have found them to be twice as long-lasting ( in edge holding ) as Stanley, Chinese Marples ( Irwin) and other home-center brands. If you have sharpening-tools and know-how, then these are a great bargain. Of course, if you do NOT have sharpening-gear and know-how, then NO chisel in the world will work well for very long.
My five-star rating is not because these are the best chisels, but because they are a superb value. With proper sharpening, they perform 90% as well as my most expensive Western-style chisels.
