Tools and Hardware Reviews of KOHLER K-4636-0 Cachet Quiet-Close Elongated Toilet Seat, White

Customer Review: Great product!
Summary: 5 Stars

I hesitated to spend so much on a toilet seat, but I have no regrets at all. It is beautifully designed and manufactured. The soft-close and removable features both work great, as other reviewers have said. The seat is at least as comfortable as the padded seat I had before it, and it's light but very strong; I weigh almost 300 pounds, and the closed lid doesn't give at all when I sit on it (I've sat on some plastic seats that felt almost like a trampoline). By the way, the seat fits and works fine on my old generic toilet from the 1950s, so the toilet doesn't have to be either a Kohler or new.

One small thing that I didn't notice until I started using it is the very nicely designed hand-hold at the front edge of the lid. The lid sticks out just a little bit farther than the seat at the front edge only, which provides a perfect lifting point for your fingers. It's a small and subtle design feature that makes a nice difference from any other seat I've used.

The only caution I'd pass on is to be careful when you install the seat about getting the little square black posts aligned correctly. They mate with the hinge latch in only one orientation, and there's no mention of them in the installation instructions. The seat comes with them correctly oriented inside the hinge, but it's hard to keep them there while you mount the seat because you have to unlatch the hinges to do it. A reviewer of the round version of this seat had complained about this and about the poor installation instructions that don't help at all. So before I took the black posts out of the hinges for mounting I checked which way they were facing, and everything went fine.

Customer Review: Total waste of money

We recently bought a new home and wanted to replace some of the toilet seats in the house. I tried this Kohler seat for our master bath, along with Mayfair's molded wood seat for the guest bath. The Kohler seat cost about 50% more, so I figured Kohler's name and quality typically associated with their products would have been worth it right?.......wrong

The Kohler seat felt flimsy and was very shifty when sitting on it. I attribute all of this to their "Quick-Release" system, which is just poorly designed compared to Mayfair.

The Kohler seat's "quiet close" hinges are not actually 1-piece/integrated into the seat like the Mayfair. I actually had to repair/reinstall the seats hinge mechanism twice within two month's of use. When the seat's hinges failed the third time......it got replaced permanently with another Mayfair, and the Kohler went straight into the trash.

Maybe I got a "lemon", but the Mayfair seems to be hands down a better seat in every way. It is more comfortable, sturdy and the quick release systems is easier/simpler to use.

I never thought I would spend the time to write a review on a toilet seat, but it was so bad, I felt inspired. I would have thought about a return, but it is a used toilet seat.....enough said.

Customer Review: Inexpensive way to freshen up and upgrade your bathroom
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great toilet seat! I have six of them now.

Just a tap and the seat and lid slowly lower themselves. My wife is very happy that the lid is always down!

I have a friend with a bad back and he loves that he doesn't have to bend to put the seat and lid down.

The quick-release catches allow you to keep it cleaner than a conventional toilet seat, as the area which you cannot clean is protected and much smaller. It is also easier to clean the seat itself, as it is quickly removed.

The seat is made of plastic, and has a high-quality look. The chamfered lid is nice. No excess flashing or flaws. Very easy to install.

Kudos to Kohler on improving the packaging within the last year. One year ago I ordered a seat, and it arrived with the hinges broken. It was obvious why: the seat was rattling around loose in the box. The box has now been redesigned to hold the seat in place. The recent batch of five I ordered were all intact.

I didn't realize how yellowed and aged my old toilet seats were until I saw them next to one of these. An inexpensive way to freshen up and upgrade my bathroom!

Customer Review: bad hinges
Summary: 3 Stars

Great toilet seat in the past. Have one from 2 yrs ago, works great!! Ordered another for my other bathroom and I was disappointed. Arrived scratched, as this seat is prone to scratching with a high gloss finish in colored plastic. I don't know if this could be polished out but I didn't try. This is more of a shipping/handling problem as this has not proven to be a problem after two years of use on my other one. It may be more of a problem if it is used in an environment such as with small children or where scratching may be more likely. The major problem however was the hinges. If the grommeted bolt that attaches to the toilet is tightened enough to prevent movement it deforms and spreads the attachment on the lid thus causing the entire seat to be loose. This was not a problem on my 2 year old seat but I have read of another such problem with this model in the reviews also. I think the attachment hardware has been redesigned, or the materials changed, in the last two years as my old Kohler doesn't have this problem. My opinion.....It was a great seat, now.... not so good. That said; a quiet close, easy detach lid is still the way to go.

Customer Review: A Toilet Seat Review - Weird Huh?
Summary: 5 Stars

Sounds weird, but I searched the net one day to find a toilet seat that would not slam when I shut it or accidentally dropped it. What do you know, they DO EXIST!

I picked up two of these. Let me tell you what - these things should be STANDARD on all toilets! Oh man, so nice just lightly closing the seat or lid and walking away knowing they are gently gliding down. No slamming! None. Not even a peep!

Only downfall is - when visiting friends or what not, you get used to your seat and when you use theirs (they have a regular one) you either catch yourself gently pushing the seat down which will result in a slam, or quickly pushing the seat down, which will also result in a slam (this is done on the quiet close seat if you want it to shut quicker - you push it down).

So, as you can see - you get used to the luxury of a quiet close seat! Don't have one? INVEST IN IT. At least one for the busiest of bathrooms in your home to try it out.

I guarantee you will like it!
