Tools and Hardware Reviews of KOHLER K-5917-NA Countertop Hardwood Cutting BoardCustomer Review: Outstanding Craftsmanship Summary: 5 StarsThis is my final update (2/12/09) on this cutting board, if you want to see my original review scroll down to: ***ORIGINAL REVIEW***
But first things first ... KUDOS to Amazon.com for their outstanding customer service. I e-mailed Amazon about the splitting of the board and immediately they replied with these words ..."A New Cutting Board Is On The Way"... WOW! I like that, this I like - Great Customer Service! And of course, one good turn deserves another, I immediately returned the 'bad' board to Amazon, no questions asked and none since.
I have to admit this about the 'bad' board, I did not oil the board when it arrived. In fact, I didn't oil the board until after two weeks of little to no use. However, the day after I oiled it, it began to split. I'm not blaming anyone but I mistakenly thought all cutting boards were pre-oiled and that I had some 'play' time (maybe not 2 weeks) before I needed to oil it. This Is Wrong Folks. If you decide to buy this board, and I suggest that you do, as soon as it arrives, unpack it and oil it down good with plenty of mineral oil on all sides. Prop it up on its side and let stand for about 24-48 hours (the board will saturate the oil like a sponge but a little slower). There's more involve when having a cutting board but if you enjoy cooking like I do, it's worth the cost (cheap for an excellent board) and time that is needed to keep this board healthy for years to come. Do your research on the web, there's plenty of information on how to properly care for your board. However, the main issue with a new or old cutting board is make sure you oil it with mineral oil.
Now about the new board, it's a great board. No splitting, no cuts just a great little board. Expect a few scratches to develope, which is natural. The mineral oil creates a kind of 'self-healing/cutting-mat' type surface, which makes the wood more supple thus reducing or elimnating the chance of cuts developing. I oil my board about 2 or 3 times a week with mineral oil (U.S.P. lubricant laxative...yep, you guessed it, the same oil grandpa use to swallow when you were a kid) and Emmet's Elixir for Cutting Boards. I wash it after every use with warm water and dish detergent.
Now a word about the size. Yes, the board measures 18" x 16", however, the dimensions are not clear. From the downward curved section to the other side is 16 inches wide. From edge to edge is 18 inches long, in other words, make sure your sink (from faucet to the front) is at least 18.5 inches long so that the curved section can hang over into the sink. Unfortunately my sink is only 16 inches long but no problem, my counter is short enough for me to turn the board around and have the curve section hang over the edge of the counter and still be close enough to my sink.
It works like a charm. Buy it folks, every culinary lover should have this type of board.
***ORIGINAL REVIEW***:
I just purchased my cutting board on November 6, got it a few days later and as of November 20, the board began to split along one of the seams. This split began to happen after the 1st coat of mineral oil (2 weeks later). I'm not sure what to do! Should I return it for a replacement or send it out to be repaired. I'm very disappointed.
RECENT UPDATE: I had to RMA my cutting board and the new replacement board is on its way ... "Kudos" to Amazon.com.
After I get the new board I'll apply mineral oil and Emmet's Elixir immediately. In my opinion, the Kohler K-5917-NA board DID NOT have any mineral oil apllied at all. This is why I think it was splitting at the seam(s). I truly believe this is a very good cutting board I just need to take preventive measures to make sure it stays that way.
I'll update my review after I see what happens to the new cutting board. Stay Tuned!
