Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kawasaki 840110 Black 19.2-Volt Drill Kit

Customer Review: Nice drill
Summary: 4 Stars

For the money, this is a nice package. The same drill sells in a smaller carrying case, no extra battery [$30 sold separately] and no bit set [although it's cheap and they break easily] for only a few dollars less elsewhere. This is my second one, I'm still using my first one but I wanted two so I can drill and screw without constantly changing bits which runs the battery down and slows down the job. The new one has an LED light that lights up the work area which is new, it only has 1 double sided bit that attaches to the base, the older one had 2, different sizes, I think they should have kept 2 double sided bits rather than add a light. These drills have good torque, the batteries last a fairly good amount of time, they have comfortable grips and I like the carrying case with extra space for your own accessories. I've gone through many portable drills in my time and none have been any better, but much more expensive. These drills don't take the place of an electric drill for sustained tough jobs but for the right application, it's a good buy in my opinion. Would have given a 5 star review except for downsizing the 2 double sided bits that attach to the base to just 1.

It's a very affordable drill set.
Nice case, good accessories, and two batteries make it a good value.
The drill works as good as any I've owned.

But, the batteries are particularly bad.

The are NiCads and the won't hold a charge for 24-hours.
The are good for about 10-15 2" screws and then exhausted

It think that these are either the absolute worst batteries I've ever encountered, and I've been using them for years!

My suggestion is that you had better plan to have the batteries upgraded at a battery store, which will cost you about $45 per battery pack. I've done that for my DeWalt, which was not much better and now I can at least do more work. However, I suspect that this drill drains the battery, some how, because it really should hold a charge for a couple of week. Other NiCads do, so I'm very disappointed.

But, that's why this kit is cheap! It's great for kids and very, very light duty work.

I dropped mine from a roof top 3 times last year. The battery was kicked out, but it's fine otherwise. Unexpected durability.

Customer Review: Not entirely what I expected
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this drill kit on Amazon because it was less then replacing the battery on my old 14v Milwaukee. (There is something seriously wrong with that picture.)

I saw 19.2 volts and assumed it was a powerful drill at a great price. Like a Ryobi

Well it may be 19.2v but it is certainly not powerful. It only takes 3/8" bits... and the LED on the charger never shuts off. Ever. Leading me to return the first one, which Amazon promptly and gracefully replaced.

There is some good news. Its compact, and easy to handle. Fit and finish is "you get what you pay for", but it is certainly not worst in class.

The case is compact and well designed. The little light is nice, and it has other features that you used to only get on substantially more expensive contractor grade gear.

Just not sure how long it will last. But for less then a battery, maybe I don't really care.

Fine for a home owner - if you are going to use it for a living I would take a pass.

Customer Review: Economy Drill set - you get what you pay for!
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this drill set about 6 years ago. I only used it for around the house "handy-man" type chores. It worked well but after about the 3 years I noticed a big difference in the ability for the battery to hold a charge. So knowing that ni-cad batteries are the biggest expense part on any set, I purchased another heavier duty drill set instead, Craftsman, with two battery packs. It works great, though a bit heavy and more bulky to use. I finally decided I needed to do something with this old drill. So I went on-line to price a replacement battery and realized it is half of a new drill set cost. So I will go for a new drill set with two batterys, that way I can salvage both drills. The drill it self never gave me a problem. Didn't even know about the re-call on the batteries. Will follow-up on that issue, but since I have had the unit for so long it may not apply. Just remember you always get what you pay for!

Customer Review: Drill Fine: Battery AWFUL!
Summary: 1 Stars

Looked like a good deal. Nice grip, nice light and easy chuck and nice torque. But battery dropped charge a few days after a full charge when brand new. Wouldn't recharge. Company replaced charger and battery. In the interim, during the swap, I purchased a second "kit" on sale that was the same price as a new battery. Now I own two drills and two batteries. Great backup, I thought. Now I own two dead batteries that will not take a charge.

The drills have been use a total of less than a total of 30 minutes since purchased. Considering the price of both units, that comes out to about $5. a hole!

I would NEVER buy a nicad battery household tool or appliance again.

From now on. Lithium is the choice for intermittent and infrequent use.
