Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kawasaki 840110 Black 19.2-Volt Drill Kit

Customer Review: Works Fine
Summary: 5 Stars

My Kawasaki model #690551 is similar to the one Amazon is selling but apparently an older model. The 19.2 volt battery pack slides on rather than the configuration on the model shown but is similar in all other respects. I get the impression that Kawasaki simply buys what Alltrade Tools is pushing out the door at that particular time and puts its name on the product. I paid $50.00 plus tax at the local outlet store to replace a Milwaukee 14 volt I lost. I read some horror stories on another web site even worse than the bad reviews this particular model got, so I bought mine fearing the worst, but willing to take the gamble. I have had mine almost a year now and am quite please with its performance. I'm a do-it-yourselfer so I can't testify as to how well it would stand up in commercial use.

Customer Review: Worked ok until the smoke came out
Summary: 1 Stars

When my 7 year old DeWalt needed new batteries I decided to take the plunge on a lower end brand. My neighbor has a Kawasaki and loves it so I gave it a try. That was a mistake!

The NiCd batteries suck, I was not able to put up 8 sheets of 5/8" sheetrock without changing batteries. I am not one of those guys that uses a whole box of screws for one sheet either.

I drilled a 1/2" hole in a double top plate to run some wire and the drill started to smoke so I got out my corded drill and finished. After letting the Kawasaki cool off for a while I tried to drive some screws with it and it smelled burned and would hardly run.

My old 14 volt DeWalt could drill (3) 1/2" holes in a double top plate before needing a battery change, it never got hot like that.

Customer Review: Decent drill/driver for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I have an 18V DeWalt driver/drill that is much better than this 19.5V Kawasaki cordless drill. The DeWalt is much more powerful and far better quality. However, a DeWalt 18V battery costs more than this entire kit which includes two batteries. I've had no problems with the Kawasaki other than the chuck does not grip drill bits securely. Also, the batteries are low capacity and don't last long.

The batteries and charger for these Kawasaki drills have been recalled because the batteries can blow up either in the charger or while you are using the drill. The reason is almost certainly due to the primitive charger which appears to apply a charge for a fixed amount of time every time the charge button is pressed. Consequently, it is easy to overcharge the battery.

Customer Review: Not bad for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

If your buying this to be a work horse I probably wouldn't bother, but if your a home handy man who needs a nice cheaply priced drill this is it. I've been in the construction business for over 30 yrs and have always bought heavy duty drills. My drills still work good but having to spend big dollars on a battery just dosn't make sense to me any more. I bought this drill at Christmas and have used it on and off for the last three months. So far it has plenty of power and is a buy for the money. The bits that came with are also pretty good in quality. So for a forty dollar drill I say go for it.

Customer Review: Don't plan on using it long
Summary: 2 Stars

This drill should've been labeled disposable. After less than a year, the batteries, both of them, barely carry a charge. While the drill was new, the thing was fantastic, and had enough included bits and pieces to make it worthwhile, and while you were running down one battery, the other was charging, making the effective life almost all day. But only a year later the thing is barely more useful than a screwdriver. If you know that your job is less than a day, and you don't plan to hold onto it for more than a few months, this is worth a sale price.
