Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: Waste of Money!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this unit after a legit gas scare. I don't know what's more scary. I had one issue with a burner on the stove left slightly open and scared us enough to go buy what we thought was a top rated unit. I should of checked here first. This unit was pretty silent for about the first 2 months, which is a good thing. I've had it now about six months and this thing goes off for no reason at "any" time. I thought maybe the battery needed changing and after a few days it starts its daily ritual of beeps. I'm ready to throw it out and probably will as soon as I find a better option.
Customer Review: False alarms...and always in the middle of the night Summary: 1 Stars
Like the other reviewers, the explosive gas part of the detector has given us false alarms - and always in the middle of the night! With the first false alarm, we had the gas co. come out and she said she'd seen this many times before. She said the likely culprits are air fresheners, dryer sheets, pretty much anything. Hmm, maybe it's my dog's gas that's setting if off? While natural gas is odorless, utilities add a "smell" to it so that unlike carbon monixide, you can smell it if you have a leak. Last night was the last straw, I am trashing this and getting a CO detector only!
Customer Review: Constant False Alarms Summary: 1 Stars
We've had this combo unit for about a year and about every month it goes off with the "explosive gas" alarm (for methane and propane, neither of which is present in our house).
It's a very loud and piercing alarm, but it will not turn off even though we hit the reset button - we have to unplug it from the wall and take out the 9 volt battery to stop the alarm. We would let ours sit for a few minutes, then re-plug it in outside - the alarm would still go off on 'explosive gas'. Yikes - it's like a cry-wolf alarm - we'll never know when to trust it.
Customer Review: It doesn't work! Summary: 1 Stars
I placed it in my living room which is next door to the kitchen. Every time I cooked with alcohol it would go off. Then I moved to the bedroom. It started going off at 2 am in the middle of the Summer. I called the fire department twice; they came over, used their equipment to "sniff" the house and found absolutely no evidence of carbon monoxide or gas. Both times I worked all day, was out of the house, didn't cook, didn't use cleaning products near it, it had absolutely no reason to go off. The gas company recommended that I unplug it - what a waste of money and energy.
Customer Review: False Alarms Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this item for a home we purchased last summer. It worked fine for about 9 months until we started getting false alarms for Explosive Gas (as others have noted). We also called the gas company and they did not detect any leaks. Enough odorant is added to natural gas that one can smell it--during the false alarms, we didn't smell anything. The alarm is VERY loud and will wake you, which is reassuring. We're switching to a CO model only and giving this model to my dad for use in his home in Mexico which may not have the same code requirements as homes in the US.
