Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: Cooking with wine sets it off! Summary: 3 StarsWe have had this detector for 4 years with no problems. We have it located our basement furnace room. All went well until I tried a recipe for Coq Au Vin (Chicken With Wine). The first part of the recipe is the marinade - cooking the chicken for about 10 minutes in wine and veggies. The GAS alarm went off. I checked our furnace room and didn't smell any gas. We turned off the furnace and opened the windows. I called my furnace guy and he couldn't find any problems. We called our utility company and he used a gas sensor and didn't find any leaks. I figured it was just an anomaly. The next night, while cooking the Coq Au Vin, the alarm went off again. After several heated moments attempting to convince my husband all was well (HECK, you know when you have a gas leak!), I went online and read these reviews. Whew! I cook with wine/alcohol frequently, but this recipe required a full bottle of red wine. Well, now I know. Just wish I had read these reviews sooner.
Customer Review: False Alarms Summary: 2 StarsWe've had this unit since 2007. Up until recently it seemed to be working fine (no false alarms). Lately, however, we get false alarms repeatedly. When we cook with any type of wine or vermuth we have to unplug the unit or it will sound. Just as others attest, this unit will sound if anyone passes gas near it. It also sounds when you use hand sanitizer anywhere in its vicinity. I am contacting Kidde to see if they will exchange it for just the CO2 product.
Customer Review: false alarms, but in it's defense it tells you so in the Instruction Booklet Summary: 3 StarsI bought this unit because we have a pretty old gas furnace and don't have the money to replace it yet. Our HVAC service professional told us to buy one of these. It has been good letting us know if our furnace is giving off any Co2 fumes but like so many others have said we have had some false alarms with Gas portion. When we cook with wine,,false alarm,,,when we paint,,,false alram,,, The instruction book does say to remove the unit when doing certain things,,, but to be honest if a person did that you would probably never have it hooked up. The placement of the unit is also cumbersome. You can't place it in drafty cold areas or hot areas or near curtains or near the bathroom, Or too close or too far from your gas unit. You are probably getting the point. Separate gas detectors are usually placed up high and in most cases placed in the attic. You never get false alarms with these units because your wife's hairspray for example doesn't reach in the attic. I think it was a bad idea For Kidde to put this unit out and more importantly a bad idea for me to buy. I will get it replaced with separate units.
Customer Review: GAS EXPLOSION DETECTED Summary: 2 StarsWOW, was I scared out of my pants last night! I have this Nighthawk detector and the alarm sounded at 10pm. The detector indicated "Gas" with a number of 288. I called 911 and the fire department came. They found nothing that would make the alarm go off. I checked the internet and discovered that this detector gives false alarms. I went out and bought a different one. Need to take that detector off the market!!!!! You are scaring people to death..
Customer Review: Saved our lives Summary: 5 StarsWe recently purchased this device and last night, the alarm sounded and it said, GAS and the number 218. We went outside to get fresh air and my husband noticed a hissing noise near the street. Natural gas was pouring out of a crack in the pavement in the street in front of our house and seeping into our house. This was at 1:30a.m. We were not awakened by the gas smell, in spite of the additive that is added by the gas company. It was approaching the flammable situation and very dangerous. We became nauseated and dizzy after a few hours of being exposed to the smell after being awakened by the alarm. We are thankful to be alive. We bought this at a local Lowe's store and paid more than the other detectors, but it was well worth the extra dollars. We highly recommend this device.
