Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: worth the extra dollars Summary: 5 Stars
This detector gives you the most protection. Plug in units with battery back up are the way to go. It's a must to have a CO detector in your house but with this product you also get the explosive gas alarm and if you have natural gas or propane in you house this is a great feature that is worth the extra couple dollars you pay. You see the news clips every couple of months of a house or business that is destroyed by a gas leak. You'll feel a lot safer in your home with this Kidde CO Detector.
They also make a great gift. I gave one to my brother because his CO detector was very old. I also recommended this unit to a friend who almost had a CO tragedy in his house. He had no CO detector and a furnace guy made a mistake in a routine service call luckily the furnace was in the basement and the basement door was closed. You can't smell CO normally but there was so much gas in his basement when he opened the door to the basement it smelled like car exhaust. He and his kids probably would have die that night at the furnace intake took in the gas and spread it through the house. So please get a CO detector and if the alarm sounds for CO be sure get out of the house and find out the cause of the CO leak.
Customer Review: The detector that cried GAS! Summary: 1 Stars
It might seem like a good idea to get this detector since it's only a few bucks more than the standard CO detector. But unless you really enjoy the sound of the 85 decibel alarm you might want to reconsider because this thing will be going off constantly.
We had the gas company come to check for a leak when the alarm sounded and the service man told us that they hate these things cause they are nearly always false alarm for explosive gas. In addition he said the display always seems to show a peak level of 220 for CO. So I checked ours and sure enough, 220 was the peak level recorded.
The problem with the unit is that it doesn't just detect natural gas or LP. Many chemicals like paints, thinners, solvents, aerosol products, etc. are likely to set it off. Two of our false alarms were caused by somebody using hairspray in a room adjacent to the hallway where the alarm was located.
Bottom line, CO is odorless, colorless and lethal so you definitely need a detector. But the CO/Gas combo unit is junk, stick with the straight CO detector. The gas company adds the smell to natural gas for a reason. You already have a detector for it; your nose. If you smell gas get out.
Customer Review: Kindly spoke: Explosive gas "false" alarms may be wine, alcohol, solvents--clear the room, vent the alarm, reinstall Summary: 4 Stars
"No reason to get excited"--
many of these grievous complaints may be caused by true "flammable" solvents, like the Old Spice complaint from one reviewer (probably alcohol in the toiletry's compound).
You "fix" the alarm by clearing the room by ventilation and "venting" the alarm by taking the alarm out into the outside air for about 10 minutes.
The question for the user is whether you want an alarm that sensitive?
If I had a baby in the house I would say, yes I do.
Adults, drinking wine or using solvents, maybe you don't. Your own nose will tell you when the solvent fumes are too intense, and as for wine, that's a bouquet issue anyway.
In any house, however, you need a carbon monoxide (CO) detector. That gas is odorless and it can kill you or at least make you real sick.
A friend had a CO detector go off, in their basement where their bedroom and their new baby's room were. Fire department came. Cause--the gas water heater "deflector" on top had tipped just a bit, causing a buildup of poisonous gas. That family is a believer now. So am I.
Customer Review: false alarms, but in it's defense it tells you so in the Instruction Booklet Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this unit because we have a pretty old gas furnace and don't have the money to replace it yet. Our HVAC service professional told us to buy one of these. It has been good letting us know if our furnace is giving off any Co2 fumes but like so many others have said we have had some false alarms with Gas portion. When we cook with wine,,false alarm,,,when we paint,,,false alram,,, The instruction book does say to remove the unit when doing certain things,,, but to be honest if a person did that you would probably never have it hooked up. The placement of the unit is also cumbersome. You can't place it in drafty cold areas or hot areas or near curtains or near the bathroom, Or too close or too far from your gas unit. You are probably getting the point. Separate gas detectors are usually placed up high and in most cases placed in the attic. You never get false alarms with these units because your wife's hairspray for example doesn't reach in the attic. I think it was a bad idea For Kidde to put this unit out and more importantly a bad idea for me to buy. I will get it replaced with separate units.
Customer Review: False Gas Alarm Summary: 1 Stars
I was relieved to find that it was sensitive when the detector went off when I was spraying a ton of lysol. But, thismorning when nothing was going on the Gas detector went off. I knew that I didn't smell any gas but I didn't want to chance it so I called the fire department to have them take a look around with their equipment. Of coarse they didn't find anything wrong, they suggested that I purchase CO specific detectors and smoke detectors seperately. Apparently there is too much stuff they(kidde) are trying to cram into these detectors and there are gliches and who knows what and when something is wrong. I bought this model at our local Menards since they didn't have any CO specific for $50. I wish that I had read these reviews first. This one is not worth the trouble, please don't buy. And oh yeah, the fire department is going to charge me too, hopefully no more than my insurance deductible of $500, but my police officer husband informed me that they typically can charge up to $1000 to come and look around the house. I plan to call the company tomorrow in hopes they will replace my detector for just a CO.
