Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery Backup

Customer Review: False Alarm
Summary: 1 Stars

Just finished up with a dramatic afternoon visit from the Atmos gas man. After my unit was screaming "GAS" for a while and saying 216 PPM CO, I figured it was a real emergency. The unit in my basement about 20 feet away from my hot water heater. My wife was taking a shower at the time, and the heater was on. I figured it was the real deal.

Long story short, Atmos sent a guy out within 20 minutes, who did a battery of tests on the gas lines, meters, and even took a longer look at my water heater than my plumber does. He spent well over an hour diagnosing things, using his professional meters, recreating the same conditions, etc. The only possible cause was a faulty meter.

DO NOT BUY THIS CRUMMY METER

The one good thing was that the Atmos guy wrote the issue up as an outside gas meter replacement - not a faulty meter - so he didn't charge me anything! And he spent lots of time explaining everything to me. Go Atmos!

Customer Review: Throw it away!

We had this unit for a year with no problem, then the false alarms started for explosive gas. The first time, I called the fire department, who responded promptly and checked the house from top to bottom. Everything was fine. They suggested that paint fumes might have set it off. A few more weeks and 2 more false alarms later, I realized it was going off every time I cooked with alcohol. Veal marsala, ribs cooked in beer, deglazing the pan with brandy, all made the alarm go off. Tonight, I realized the alarm was unplugged after the latest episode of the exploding beer alarm, and plugged it back in. Within minutes, the explosive gas alarm was going off again. What is it time? The full garbage can? Turpentine in the basement? Latex paint? Who knows. I think the real problem with this is that we are going WITHOUT a CO detector every time we leave this thing unplugged. I will go out TOMORROW and buy a CO only alarm.

Customer Review: Kidde Nighthawk Explosive Gas/CO Alarm Saved Me
Summary: 5 Stars

-----I was cleaning with 99% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) when my Kidde Nighthawk 900-0113 explosive gas/carbon monoxide (CO) detector went off. It was built to detect methane--Natural Gas--and propane, but I guess it detects anything explosive, fortunately. There was a lit pilot light in the room; the alcohol vapor did not reach explosive concentrations before the alarm sounded or I would not be typing this. The detector is five years old; I am not sure the CO part still works, but the explosive gas part sure does. I am ordering two more; I will mount one high up and the other low down, as some gasses--like alcohol--are heavier than air. "Isopropyl alcohol *vapour* is heavier than air and is highly flammable.... It should be kept away from heat and open flame. When mixed with air...it can explode...." --Wikipeda Free Encyclopedia. My unit does not eat batteries. ---Jim

Customer Review: Awesome product
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this carbon monoxide/ flamable gas alarm. We have 2 others, and this is to replace one of them. We had a scare a few months ago when our lawnmower's gas tank ruptured and dumped an entire tank of gasoline on the garage floor. At 3am we woke up because the whole house was full of fumes and the alarm was going off. It saved us from a potential explosion, and I won't go without one now. It is totally worth the money, and the battery back-up guarantees you won't end up with a problem when the power goes out. This product is a real life saver.

Incidentally, we have added one near the floor next to the kitchen. We put it there because we have a gas stove and a toddler, and Co2 and flammable gases are heavy. So this alarm will go off before anything happens to our baby if there are any issues with our appliances. It gives me real peace of mind.

Customer Review: Too many false alarms!

This detector worked for about 6 months perfectly - then one day my mother visited my home and happened to spray Lysol in the kitchen (about 10 feet from where the detector was in another room). Well who knew that Lysol is an explosive gas! We were very alarmed at first and almost called the fire department to report a gas leak until I read the small print in the back of the instruction manual. This unit detects household gases such as those in hairspray, room sprays, etc as well as poisonous gases... I thought that knowing this I just wouldn't spray anything in the house -- wrong again! Once the alarm went off once, it continued to go off randomly and would not shut off (even when I took it outside it continued to go off for about 10 minutes until I removed the battery). Needless to say this became extremely annoying, and I will not be purchasing another!
