Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: Kidde Nighthawk Explosive Gas/CO Alarm Saved Me Summary: 5 Stars
-----I was cleaning with 99% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) when my Kidde Nighthawk 900-0113 explosive gas/carbon monoxide (CO) detector went off. It was built to detect methane--Natural Gas--and propane, but I guess it detects anything explosive, fortunately. There was a lit pilot light in the room; the alcohol vapor did not reach explosive concentrations before the alarm sounded or I would not be typing this. The detector is five years old; I am not sure the CO part still works, but the explosive gas part sure does. I am ordering two more; I will mount one high up and the other low down, as some gasses--like alcohol--are heavier than air. "Isopropyl alcohol *vapour* is heavier than air and is highly flammable.... It should be kept away from heat and open flame. When mixed with air...it can explode...." --Wikipeda Free Encyclopedia. ---Jim

Customer Review: 8 Firemen Later Summary: 1 Stars
Our CO/GAS detector has gone off three times with a reading of GAS, followed by a number in the 200's. The first two times that the alarm went off, we decided that it was a false alarm because we did not smell any gas. However, after the third time the alarm triggered we decided that we better call the fire department and have it checked out. The first four firemen that arrived asked me questions and walked around the house to inspect and look at the CO/GAS monitor. Then four more firemen showed up with a monitor to check the levels of CO and GAS. After inspecting the house and checking the CO and GAS levels in all of the rooms it was found that there was no CO or GAS present in my home. The alarm was again a false alarm. I wish we had researched this model number before purchasing this unit. We could have saved everyone a bunch of time.
Customer Review: Best Alarm with a few problems, but with a responsive company Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this alarm about one and a half years ago. For a while we had no problems at all. It even detected a leak when the line that supplied the gas to our stove cracked. Then we started getting false GAS alarms in the early morning hours. They would happen about 3-4 times a week. After a thorough inspection, we felt certain that these alarms were indeed false. I called KIDDE after reading this suggestion from other reviews. The customer service rep, Kathryn, was very helpful, professional and concerned. She sent us a replacement within 10 days, and we mailed the defective unit back to her for inspection.
Almost all products can have defects, but very few companies actually respond in a professional, quick manner. There is no better alarm out there, and Kidde has proven to be a responsible company.
Customer Review: A must have for anyone with propane or natural gas heat Summary: 5 Stars
I have worked as an industrial safety specailist for the last 30 years and have seen the devastation of a flammable gas explosion. This is my second unit that I have purchased; this one is for my daughter.
I can tell you that my first unit worked just as intended. I am a home wine maker and when transferring wine from one copntainer to another near the meter the alcohol vapors in the air set off the alarm.
Prior to my purchase of this second meter through "amazon.com", I could not, however, find this model of meter (capable of detecting both carbon monoxide and flamable gases) in my local Home Depot or Lowes stores, nor was it listed on the manufacturer's web site. I sure hope the manufacturer does not discontinue this combination flamable gas carbon monoxide meter. It is a must have product.
