Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm with Battery BackupCustomer Review: False Alarms Galore! Summary: 1 Stars
My wife and I bought one of these Kidde Nighthawk alarms and it has alerted us a total of FIVE TIMES WITHIN THE PAST THREE MONTHS that there was explosive gas present with a measurement around 215. Not once has there actually been any sort of a danger. We've had nothing but false alarms with this product, and today, after it going off three consecutive times within the past fifteen minutes, it's getting the boot.
The other reviewers are correct in saying that explosive gas has a distinct smell. The only thing *I* was smelling when this alarm went off was the soap I had just used to wash my hands. Deadly and explosive? I think not!
Customer Review: No false alarms, just sensitive Summary: 5 Stars
I use this one in my kitchen. If I forget to turn on the exhaust fan before heating up the oven, I can see the numbers climb in the readout. For safety equipment, I think sensitivity is a virtue.
A friend was having headaches for months during the heating season and finally learned that her CO alarm had such a high thresh-hold that it missed the sub-lethal doses of CO the faulty furnace was putting out. Better safe than sorry.
And isn't most hairspray a "toxic gas," or close enough to one to think twice about using it in an unventilated space? I find the idea of it detecting such gases quite comforting.
Customer Review: Just had a false gas alarm Summary: 1 Stars
We just had an explosive gas alarm tonight. I picked up the baby and ran out of the house into the 27 degree night, the fire dept came out and found nothing wrong. I decided to see if there were any reviews on this unit. I wish I had read the reviews before I bought this. I don't want to throw it out just in case it does detect gas one day, hopefully there won't be any more false alarms. I know gas has a smell, but I used to live in an apt. before where there was a gas leak and I didn't know it, so I'm sort of paranoid now. The fire dept. gave us a new battery so we'll see. Why can't anyone make a reliable gas detector?
Customer Review: Failed Summary: 1 Stars
I got this for my daughter last Spring. A house warming gift.
She unplugged it and pulled out the battery. Too many false alarms.
I took it back and tested it. I got a few GAS false alarms, (in clean closed rooms) but now,it mostly shows ERR on the display and beeps like crazy.
I suspect it might be sensitive to AC line voltage spikes (heat coming on) or maybe radio interference. Since we live in the city, close to a multitude of cell towers and radio stations.
IIRC, I paid about $40 for this at Lowes.. A waste of time and money.
Not recommended..
Customer Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
This alarm is great. I have it mounted in the basement with my gas boiler and water heater. Once for example, I was painting with some heavy duty shellac paint in another room in the basement. The smell started to get totally noxious and I started to wonder if I should go shut down the pilot flame to the water heater. About the same time the alarm started shouting "gas". Technically thats probably a false alarm, but for do it your-self people it is something not to be without. Once the alarm sounds if you know the area you are in is safe, then you can move the alarm to a clear area until you are done working.
