Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital DisplayCustomer Review: Battery Questions Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this gadget thinking I could leave out the battery altogether. But, apparently, you have to put a battery in or you get only a "Lb" (low battery) indication on the display - which is not all that informative when you know you purposely left it out.
But, it does seem to work as advertised - it always reads "O" though, either my gas powered appliances are clean burning or else it doesn't work at all. Is there a way to test it other than the self test button??
Review addendum: This thing draws a lot of current (60 milliamps). If it goes into backup mode for only a few hours for whatever reason, the battery will deplete. Maybe this is one reason for so many battery complaints.
Customer Review: long lasting and able to detect levels as low as 11 ppm Summary: 5 Stars
This is probably the best CO detector on the market. It will last you 7 years - the cheaper non-digital detectors will only last 2 years and will end up costing you much more money in the long run.
The best feature is the peak level dectector which will allow you to monitor carbon monixide levels as low as 11 ppm (the alarm will go off if ppms excede 50). There are some reports and studies that show that a constant exposure to low level carbon monoxide gas can cause long term health problems - so this is a handy way to check different parts of your house for this.
I am suprised at the Amazon price for this. I got this at Home Depot in West Roxbury MA for $49.00.
Customer Review: My previous one lasted seven years! Summary: 5 Stars
I placed my order Thursday afternoon, chose "Free" shipping, and received it by noon on Saturday. This alarm was purchased to replace my previous one (same model) that had just quit after seven years of service; almost to the day. Although it had never gone off I assume it had been doing it's job faithfully during that period. This new one looks to be exactly like my old one except for the "Kidde" brand on the face. My old one was branded "Nighthawk". And the user's manual is now a fold out sheet of paper rather than the twenty-two page booklet that was packaged with my original one. Overall, I highly recommend this unit and hope they're still available seven years from now.
Customer Review: Battery problem solved Summary: 5 Stars
I also had a problem with my two detectors using up the batteries in one to two months time. But I called Kidde customer service and after I gave them the model no and assembly dates from the back of the units, they confirmed that these models were defective. Apparently there is a faulty circuit that triggers the low battery indicator prematurely. So the batteries are actually not worn down completely. The problem is with the sensor that reads the battery levels. Kidde sent me two new detectors. They are working fine so far. I will know more after a couple months. If you have this problem, call Kidde customer service and they should take care of you.
Customer Review: probably saved our lives Summary: 5 Stars
We had this exact model in our cabin for years. The digital readout always read "0". One night we had a fire in the fireplace, and let the flames die out to just embers and went to bed. The damper on the fireplace was open, however we awoke to a piercing sound that would have wakened the dead. The Nighthawk had a reading of 40 something. That is low enough where we might not have died, however the number/ level of carbon monoxide could have rapidly elevated, and without this detector, we surely could have died. I love the fact that it detected CO at a low level, and we were able to take action promptly (get everyone up and out and air out the cabin).
