We have owned the older version of this CO detector since 2003. It has worked fine since we purchased it, but this week things changed. We were awakened in the middle of the night to a loud alert from the detector, and got up to inspect the unit. The detector read "ERR," and did not seem to be indicating a CO threat. The next day I dug through the user's manual only to find that the company has designed the device to fail after 7 years of use (as indicated by the code "ERR")! The unit was working perfectly with no need to be replaced! Kidde publishes the following in their user's manual: "IMPORTANT: Seven (7) years after the initial power up, this alarm will 'beep' every 30 seconds to indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. Replace the alarm immediately! It will not detect CO in this condition." What a joke! Essentially the alarm has been designed to self-destruct so that you have to purchase a new one. I consider this a rip-off. Buy with caution.
