Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kidde KN-COPP-B Front Load Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display

Customer Review: CO Monitoring In Garage
Summary: 4 Stars

I was going to use a forced air kerosene heater to warmup the garage for winter car restoration projects. The Kidde Alarm along with simple thermometer first allowed me to take CO level & temperature data to get a good sense of safe operating limits on cold days. After 2 hrs, CO levels rose to the 50 to 70ppm levels after a 25 to 50F warmup...wise time to shutdown! Also was able to check on any potential CO bleed into the attached house (none)as well as CO decay rate when heater turned off & temperature drops. All in all it worked very well & measurements one day to the next were reproducible/consistant. The only shortcoming not mentioned in Amazon ad, but well covered in Kidde brochure was the 30ppm minimum reading level inherent with the unit. I would have paid 10 to 20% more for unit that goes 10ppm or less.....but probably not realistic availability. Also used to spot check oil furnace & wood burning fireplace....all zeros. All in all it worked great & I just leave in furnace room when not actually heating garage.

Customer Review: Works fine, needs better mounting option
Summary: 4 Stars

This is probably the best value for an CO detector that actually has a digital read out for the PPM of CO gas detected. Having the readout is important so you can differentiate between a low alarm (maybe <100 ppm) from baking and something more serious (>400 ppm). The unit I received in March 2010 is the one with the squarish buttons - not the newer round button unit that is also sold through this same amazon page.

I am very handy around the house - I redid my own bathroom down to the studs. This was not difficult to mount, but it could have been much easier. It uses two keyholes on the back. There is no template provided and - unlike most smoke detectors - the mounting plate does not detach from the unit. Thus, there is much measuring and leveling to do it right. Ours is wall mounted next to the thermostat in the hall - away from the kitchen.

So far, no false alarms and the max reading/backlight button is a nice feature.

Uses 3 AA batteries - included - Duracell - nice.

Customer Review: A Great Buy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been paranoid about carbon monoxide poisoning ever since I saw an episode of "Rescue 911" where a family all got poisoned. I make sure my house always has a detector. I left my old one at my old house when I moved so I've been looking at different models to buy one for my new house. Most models I've seen at the stores that are similar in price to this one do not have a digital display that always shows the carbon monoxide level. Those that had this feature were usually in the $40-50 range. I was really excited to see this one on Amazon and it seemed to have all the features I was looking for. I've had it for a few months now and it's great! It has a green light that occasionally blinks but it doesn't bother me at night (I keep it in my bedroom) as long as I face it away from me. It has a little stand so you don't need to wall mount it if you don't want to but it comes with screws if that's your preference. Overall, this was a great buy and it gives me peace of mind.

Customer Review: Loud piercing noise after putting batteries in
Summary: 3 Stars

I just purchased this CO alarm and set it up. I'm sure it will work fine based on the other reviews, but I'm deducting two stars for now. Why did it have to let out a high pitched noise after putting the batteries in? Who designed that feature? I imagine the product meeting went something like this:

Product guy 1: How should we let the user know they've set up the alarm correctly and it is functioning?
Product guy 2: Why don't we have it let out a high pitched tone to deafen the user, make ears bleed, and frighten small children?
Product guy 1: Brilliant!

I would have much preferred the LCD screen to say "Thanks for putting in my batteries, captain! I'm ready to detect carbon monoxide. Good day sir!" I didn't need a demonstration on what the alarm would sound like. I'm sure if the alarm eventually went off, I wouldn't run around asking "What is that noise?!?"

Customer Review: Better than a screaming idiot light
Summary: 4 Stars

We already had 3 standard smoke/CO alarms in the house and were told by our furnace repairman during a recent cleaning visit that we should upgrade to alarms with digital displays.

We ordered the first one from Amazon and liked it, so we decided to buy two more from HD, as they were the same price when considering shipping. Delivery from Amazon was, as always, sooner than advertised.

This is one of those products that you just have to have faith will do what it's supposed to. I gave it four stars because we won't really know until it actually happens. I did place our first one in the garage with the car backed in and running (and the garage doors open...) to see if it would register and it did very quickly! Yikes, that was loud...

Hopefully, we'll never have to find out if it will work with something a little less than an auto tailpipe nearby.
