Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kikkerland CD401 Classic Survival ToolCustomer Review: Functional little tool -- in a pinch. Summary: 4 Stars
One thing we seem to like doing is seeing how many tools we can pack into a small area. This tool certainly takes this obsession to a new level. It's small: 1.75" wide, 2 11/16" long, and a little over 1/16" thick (2mm). Yet it packs a whopping 11 functions, which immediately presents two main problems: leverage, and clearance. While the functions work in theory, in practice you might find it difficult to get enough leverage to easily make the tool work. Also, because so many are packed into such a small area, you might not be able to get the tool into the space you want. For example, the shaft of a screwdriver is thin which allows it to get into tight spaces, but to use the screwdriver on this tool you need a clearance radius of 2".
Now, that said, do they work? Here's a rundown of each function:
Can Opener: Doesn't make the smoothest of edges, but gets the job done. When using it your fingers have to grip the tool by the saw blades -- ouch! This problem is easily alleviated by padding your fingers with a bandanna, or similar.
Knife Edge: Pretty sharp. I used it to whittle a piece of wood down, and it did a pretty good job.
Flathead Screwdriver: Works, if the screw is easily accessible with about a 2" radius of clearance around it.
Ruler: Metric, accurate. Four cm long.
Bottle Opener: Pop! Fizz! Works like you would expect.
4-Position Wrench: Works well, but you need enough clearance around the nut to fit the tool around it. Leverage could be a problem.
Butterfly wrench: Works. But isn't the whole point of a butterfly nut that you *don't* need a tool to use it?
Saw Blade: The blade is short, about 1.25" long, with a double row of sharp triangular teeth. The length means that you can only use short strokes, but I was able to get through a 5/8" branch in a couple of minutes.
Direction Ancillary Indication: Now, what's this? I remember reading in a survival book long ago about a method of using your hair to temporarily magnetize a small pin, and using it and a little water to find magnetic north. I believe that is what this tool is for. Fill the indicator with water, run a small pin through your hair, and place it on the water in the indicator (you need a pin small enough to be held up by surface tension) and it will turn to magnetic north.
2-Position Wrench: Same as the 4-position wrench.
Lanyard Hole: Works like any other lanyard hole. Given the number of sharp edges on this tool, I'm not sure you want it hanging off your key chain or purse, though.
Conclusion: While obviously not a primary (or even secondary) use tool, this is certainly handy enough to be used in a pinch. Plus, it's a small, thin multi-tool! How cool is that? Perfect gift or stocking stuffer.
