This device works very well in an oven, patio gas grill and a wood fired pizza oven.
It takes a short learning curve to understand surface temperature vs. internal temperature.

I've had mine about a year now and it's been a big help in finding areas where I'm losing a lot of heat in my older house. It's really helpful to know, oh, these two areas both feel a bit cold, but one's five degrees cooler than the surrounding area, and the other one's ten. Let's prioritize that second one.
Some of the things it found wouldn't have occurred to me otherwise. Part of our house is built over the garage and the floor in that area is shockingly cold. There's basically no insulation between a couple of rooms and the garage, so the garage temperature really affects the house much more than I would have guessed. And then you walk around the garage and see - where's the heat going? What areas can be improved cheaply for the maximum benefit? It turns out that a couple of small fixes in the garage could impact the nursery more than any other similarly priced change I could have made.
Everyone's situation's different of course, but that's the point. You just try some different ideas, look for weird temperature changes, and see what you can do about them.
As noted in other reviews these have a ton of other uses, plus it's more interesting than you might think to just see what temperature things are (partially because it's so easy).

I bought this thermometer last month and it is amazing. It seems to be consistent and pretty accurate, although it consistently measures the surface of a pot of water in a rolling boil at only about 204 (+/- 2) degrees. I don't know if that is because it isn't 100% accurate or because perhaps water really doesn't boil at 212 degrees F like they say.
My only minor gripe is that when I put it in its case, it sometimes seems to get activated by accident.
