Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kwikset 740J 15 SMT CP Juno Entry Knob Featuring SmartKey, Satin NickelCustomer Review: Do not buy this Kwikcrap lock Summary: 1 Stars
I am not a Locksmith but I know a fair amount about locks. I do my own lock work and the work for friends. This lock has two major flaws. It looses it programming. No key that has ever worked will open the lock. Kwikset even sells a tool to temporarily fix the problem. The other problem is that a somewhat knowledgeable person can take a key blank file it down some on all pin positions. Put the key in the lock and put that key in vise-grips a wrench or a pair of pliers. Turn the key and break in. With out using much force. No drilling no hammers no kicking. Now after doing this either the lock will no longer function (not unlock or Lock) or in some cases the User has no Idea his lock is broken that a screwdriver will now open it. Biometric locks for residential use don't work well for long either. Combination locks do work and you have the option of opening it with a key if you forgot the combo or the battery died. What is your safety worth. How much do you value your home and property. What good is it to save a penny on a locksmith or a good lock if your not safe. For Peace of Mind do it right. There are a few locks that can be re-keyed by the end user but they are very expensive and in one case you need a PDA type device or a computer connection for the optical key reader. Schlage makes one but I do not as yet know much about it.
Customer Review: Great Indoors Summary: 5 Stars
I recently noticed how vulnerable I was to burglary: My two roommates and a relative all have keys and are coming and going fairly regularly, sometimes leaving our front and back doors unlocked or completely open. One of them is usually babysitting a child here as well. I decided I wanted an extra layer of security for my bedroom, and I wanted something I could lock while I was gone--not a typical keyless "privacy lock" knob--so I ordered this keyed doorknob.
I've never installed a doorknob before, or even seen the insides of one, but it was fairly straightforward. It took me about 45 minutes to have the door working perfectly. It came with two keys that already work with the lock, so that saved me some money and a trip to the hardware store.
I didn't end up needing to use the SmartKey feature thanks to the included keys, but I recommend this doorknob to anyone who wants a keyed lock for their bedroom.
Customer Review: Easy to install and rekey Summary: 5 Stars
I ended up buying this from a different place, but wanted to leave a review anyway. These doorknobs were very easy to install. I also purchased the Thick Door Kit for 2 of my doors that were 2 1/4" thick. All was very easy. Furthermore, these knobs have an additional ease of installation point that needs to be mentioned. The knob can be attached after the screws are screwed into the lock. So there is no need to hold the knob, fit the screws into the holes in the know, and then try desperately to put the ends of the screws into the know on the other side of the door. You just screw in the screws into the opposite knob on the other side of door, then attach the knob and tighten. That is it. After that, rekeying the Smartkey is really a snap. That took about 10 seconds to do, no joke.
Customer Review: Awsome Summary: 5 Stars
This product is everything the ads say it is. I have a duplex and have to change keys whenever a new tenant moves in. Thought I'd try the Smart Key and am so glad I did. It costs more to have the locks rekeyed than the new units did. Now rekeying is a matter of having three keys of the same type (one for me) and 5 seconds with the Smart Key. Thanks Kwikset and thanks Amazon!
Customer Review: well made Summary: 5 Stars
really handy to replace an old lock that dose not match the other locks on your home. just make sure you follow the directions.
