Customer Review: Great until it broke

I bought this exact lock set at Home Depot. A few weeks after installing it in my new door, my daughter was poking the latch (not the bolt lock, but the small one) and it got stuck in the door. I took it apart and found that the deadlock plunger appeared to be stuck inside the mechanism. I coaxed it out, and the latch resumed working; however the deadlock plunger (if that's what it is) is not the usual metal rod, but a thin plastic part - very delicate and cheap looking. I put the lock back together and it's working, for now.
The upside of this lock set is that it feels very precise and solid (which turns out to be deceiving). It was fairly easy to install for an elaborate handset. Looks nice, and works like silk when it's not stuck. It also has a very slick "smart key" mechanism which made it a snap to re-key the lock to our existing house key. Maybe this clever-but-complex mechanism is part of the problem.
I was very happy with this until the latch stuck. Now I don't trust it. A front door lock should be designed to withstand baseball bats and hammers - a little girl should not be able to break it with her finger. I'm been a kwikset bigot for 30 years, but they're now "on probation" with me. If I didn't have an investment in four other exterior kwikset locks (which all have metal dead lock plungers) I'd be looking for another brand right now.
