This gadget works perfectly for what it's supposed to do. I'm still not sure how the family member unset the lock during a rekey, but for less than $20 it did what it was supposed to do. It took longer to remove the cylinder from the lock, but once it was out, drop it in twist, rekey it and reinstall the cylinder. I found the cradle and instructions to be very good. Only problem was that they start at the point where you already have the cylinder out of the lock. You have to follow the instructions carefully and pay attention to what you're doing, but it will allow you to reset a smartkey cylinder and rekey it to any other smartkey you want.
