Customer Review: Excellent product

Having used these deadbolts on my front, back, and three patio doors for about five years, I am puzzled by some of the negative reviews (except the locksmith who sells Schlage products and so obviously doesn't want you to buy Kwikset). All five of my deadbolts work well and dependably. I installed all five and installation (replacing existing deadbolts) was easy. The batteries last several months and are simple to replace (unlike the Schlage models, which require unscrewing part of the lock).
This is an electromechanical system, using a motor to turn the deadbolt when you press the unlock code or the "lock" key. That does mean that the system can malfunction if your door and jamb are not properly aligned and the bolt, as it extends out of the lock, doesn't slide into the hole for it in the jamb. But if your door isn't aligned -- or if slamming it, etc. can throw it out of alignment -- then the problem is with your door, not with the lockset. Lousy doors can be as big a security problem as lousy locks (and also hurt the home's weatherproofing/energy efficiency). Fix your doors first, then buy any deadbolt you like.
Whether the Powerbolt is really "maximum security" depends on how much security you need. A career burglar will get through this or almost any other lock, by picking or "bumping" it. The answer is to get a real deadbolt -- one that cannot be operated from the outside -- but that solution obviously doesn't work if you're the one who wants to get in.
The one criticism that makes sense to me is from the guy in a cold climate who's afraid that the motor would freeze. I don't know if it would or not -- it doesn't get that cold where I come from -- but it sounds possible.
The main drawback to the Kwikset unit is esthetic: the large, plastic housing on the back side of the door that covers the battery compartment. The Kwikset needs this because it uses 4 AA batteries to turn the motor (the Schlage gets by with one 9-volt battery since all its battery does is to light the keypad). The cover to this housing is beige plastic; it can be painted to match painted doors but doesn't look nearly as good as metal on stained wooden doors. One star off for that but still a fine product.

With your own personal code, you can enter your home with just a few simple pushes of a button?and you can easily and securely lock it with just one. In addition to personal code settings, you can assign a temporary code to whoever needs one?in-laws, babysitters, dog walkers, household help?and delete it when you see fit. Operation is also simple: to lock, press the lock button just once; to open, just enter the code on the keypad and the deadbolt will automatically retract. To program your first user code, press the program button on the interior unit once, enter a four- to eight-digit code into the keypad, and press the lock button to save it.
