Customer Review: Nice look/Features - Not as easy to install as advertised

This lock is ideal where you have family members (ie teenagers) forgetting their key and calling late at night to be let in, or have someone come to your home (ie cleaner. maintenance, neighbor, sitter, Realtor) that you don't want to give a key to and risk to chance of it being duplicated. No need anymore to leave a key under the door mat just in case you find yourself locked out, thieves know where to look for those keys!!
I first saw a lock similar to this on a rental home and liked the idea of not having to collect a key or fiddle with a separate lock box (which are typically bulky/ugly).
The installation as a retro-fit to replace existing hardware can be tricky. Our existing deadbolt was 'snug' and required one to pull on the door handle gently to lock/unlock. This won't work with a motor driven lock, it has to latch perfectly or else it either won't lock/unlock or will put extra strain/wear on the mechanism. Connecting a small wiring bundle to the main logic board was fiddly, they could have designed something a little better/more robust IMHO.
One can set two different access codes. I chose one code for close family members and programmed the second for a cleaner. If the second code gets compromised I can change it quickly and not inconvenience family members.
An unexpected added feature is the ability to rekey the manual keyed override to match the other locks on your property. The instructions were less than clear but I achieved a rekey in a few minutes. So I still only need one key to open all doors and no need to call a locksmith!!
The lock can also be set to auto lock after 30 seconds of inactivity. Unless the door is has an automatic closing device, it would be more of a hindrance than help. But I can see how some may find it useful. This feature is off by default.
It takes 4AA alkaline batteries, re-chargeables are not recommended (they are cheaper in the long run but don't hold a charge as long; even when idle). The manufacturer claims the unit should last a year between battery changes under normal domestic use. For commercial applications I would expect the batteries to run down too often.
I found the finish to be elegant. A cheaper unit by Kwikset has a cheesy looking interior, I much prefer this model.
I got my unit at Home Depot for less than Amazon, easier for returns as well (not that I needed to do that).
Highly recommended.

With your own personal code, you can enter your home with just a few simple pushes of a button?and you can easily and securely lock it with just one. In addition to personal code settings, you can assign a temporary code to whoever needs one?in-laws, babysitters, dog walkers, household help?and delete it when you see fit. The SmartCode features setting options that you can control via a panel of switches on the back of the lock. Customize your SmartCode settings by moving the switch to the appropriate on or off position. Switch one enables the LED light to blink (green for unlocked, red for locked); the second switch enables the auto-lock feature (automatically relock the door 30 seconds after unlocking); and the third switch enables beeping (on functions performed or keypad touched). Installation is easy?only a screwdriver is needed?and the deadbolt operates on four AA batteries (sold separately) so no hard wiring is required. Operation is also simple: to lock, press the lock button just once; to open, just enter the code on the keypad and the deadbolt will automatically retract.
