Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kwikset 99080-006 Signatures SmartScan Biometric Deadbolt, Venetian BronzeCustomer Review: Great lock so far Summary: 5 StarsSeveral Month Update
This lock continues to work perfectly, I get first swipe recognition every time. Love it.

2 WEEK UPDATE: Works perfect, first swipe recognition every time using tip #1, below. Scanned several people in with no problems. The timed entry setting is great. Love this lock and would pay a lot more for it.
-------------------------------------------------
I bought this lock after looking at lots of biometric options, so far I'm very happy with it. I think the price was fair to low for the advanced scanning features, the smart-key hardware, and build quality.
One thing I didn't like--although it was well packed--a few smudges and a small nick make me wonder if it was a refurb. I've read other reviews that say the same thing. Nothing major. I had some trouble finding the polished brass finish so I overlooked it. Also, the interior housing is mostly white textured plastic with matching metal accents. I actually like it for my door, but was a little surprised. General build quality seems solid.
Installation was a breeze, but if you don't look at the pics closely you could miss installing the metal ring that sits under keyed part of the lock assembly. Also only shown in picture form, is the orientation of the ribbon cable as it inserts into the back of the interior assembly. And no where does it say to secure the ribbon connection by sliding the socket's plastic retaining clip down to lock it in place. I know how to lock ribbon cables in their sockets from working on PCs and laptops, but some might not catch this very simple step.
Be careful when enrolling the first user. The initial scan will be the first administrator, so if you don't get a repeatable scan, you will lock yourself out of the system. I made this mistake by playing with the lock before it was on the door. I got repeated recognition before the lock was installed, but once it was on the door it wouldn't recognize my swipe. I had to enter the factory code of Aaaa (found it on the internet) to reset the lock. The reset code is not included in the paperwork.
The lock works great. No problems with finger recognition after installing it. It wouldn't even require much practice if the manual didn't do a good job of hiding the best tips in the FAQ. I think these would help others who have posted problems getting the lock to recognize their fingers on the first try. Three tips are particularly helpful:
1) When you place your finger under the scanner, hold it still for a fraction of a second until the lock "wakes up" (LED lights up orange) before pulling your finger across. This is the ONLY way to get the scanner to recognize your first swipe. After realizing this, I get single swipe recognition 95% of the time.
2) Enroll your primary finger several times under separate user IDs. This seems very helpful to recognize children who are not as consistent with their swipes. The lock displays the user name when it finds a match, so you can see the benefit of doing this.
3) If you have trouble enrolling kids, set the biometrics sensitivity to NORMAL. The default is HIGH. My 9 year old couldn't enroll on HIGH, but has no problem using the lock on HIGH. Enrolling is harder than using the lock since it requires 3 matches in a row. My 6 year old can't enroll on NORMAL.
The lock has a great features list:
- Simple installation (requires 3 wood/metal screws to mount the interior housing)
- Very discrete; no way to leave the outside scanner opened up
- Looks great inside and out
- Excellent fingerprint recognition and no false positives so far
- Simple, intuitive electronic menus
- Great admin features, like limited access times per user
- Doesn't lose the finger database without power
The only features I would add are auto-locking after a specified time delay, and a log to view who opened the door and when.
Overall, I didn't expect to be this happy with the lock. A nice surprise.
