Tools and Hardware Reviews of Kwikset Signatures SmartScan Biometric Deadbolt in Satin Nickel Finish #908 15 SMT CPCustomer Review: Poor performer Summary: 2 StarsLike you, I sometimes go against Amazon reviews and order an item, regardless of a poor review. This often works out fine.
However, I'm warning you now, pay attention to the negative reviews on this product. I've had TWO of this product (brass trim) since the summer of 2006, not purchased through Amazon, and paid two hundred and fifty for each. Both of these biometric deadbolts perform similarly - very poor. One can imagine that after three years of swiping fingers and re-enrolling fingerprints into memory, we kind of have an idea of the issues with this product, and how to swipe a finger consistently (first thing the service people will say).
They are outside temperature sensitive. When the cold comes, it's time to enroll new prints for the family. Don't know about the direct sunlight issue, as one of mine gets just early morning sun, and the other gets no sun.
Subdermal scan? Naaah... do some yard work or construction that roughs up your hands a bit and you better have that key handy. Count on enrolling new prints or not using it until your skin heals up a bit.
Here is how we get the gizmo to work the best (EDIT: and we shouldn't have to do the following steps because all of the following reduce security) and even then it just seems to forget us and we have to enroll new prints all over again. What we do is just enroll (scan) one finger for each person instead of one from each hand, but we scan that one finger not less than 10 times into memory. It increases the odds that the scanner will recognize us. If I had my way I would scan two or three fingers ten times each to be really sure but you can only scan in 50 prints and with four family members you can't do that for all. The other thing we had to do is use the "normal" scan security setting. No way to use the "high security" setting.
You'll also need to call them to get the factory reset procedure when it refuses to recognize the 'administrator' (the first person to enroll a print). If the administrator can't swipe in then the settings can't be changed and no further enrollments can happen - the memory must be wiped clean and everyone gets rescanned.
It is incredibly frustrating for a 250 dollar gizmo to have you standing in the cold with bags in your hands and your keys buried in layers of clothing, giving you the red blinky light meaning 'scan again'. Contrary to some reviewers apparently being content to scan several times to get the lock open... when I pay this much for this product it better let me in my house the very first try... period. Too much to pay for a gizmo that works intermittently.
If you buy this, be prepared for frustration and keep your key close. And don't show it off to your neighbor, because you'll probably have to swipe your print three times to get in your door and he'll be asking, "is it supposed to take so long to open?". We've had enough of this nonsense and are looking at the Schlage push button lock with 34 reviews and nothing lower than 4 stars.
UPDATE: We ended up buying the Schlage Keypad for two doors. Outstanding lock set. Far easier than the biometrics, 100% reliable, nice styling available, and excellent lock features. Like the idea of no motor spinning the deadbolt back and forth compared to another popular brand, just a gimmick, and not needed as the Schlage deadbolt operation demonstrates. Believe the reviews on the Schlage pushbutton deadbolt. You can get the Schlage in just the basic deadbolt set for an excellent price, but we bought the entire handle set from another dedicated lock website for a much better price than on Amazon. Here is the Amazon link to the set we have now: FE365-CAM-ACC-716 Schlage Keypad Front Entry Set Aged Bronze. Here is the link to one style of the basic Shlage deadbolt set: Schlage BE365VCAM716 Camelot Deadbolt Keypad, Aged Bronze. Look at the excellent reviews of all the different styles of the this deadbolt set - and believe them to be accurate.
We're very pleased and relieved to be free of the Kwikset Biometric silliness.
