Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817Customer Review: With this kit and a little time, you can repair your garage door opener Summary: 5 Stars
I was faced with the decision to purchase a new garage door opener for about $230 or repair the existing opener from 1992 which lacks some of today's safety features. Since I don't use this garage door often and I don't have children, I opted to save some cash and do the repair myself. I have no previous experience of doing these types of garage door opener repairs, but as a do-it-yourselfer I figured it was worth the attempt.
The kit came with detailed instructions which broke the process down into 5 main steps each with multiple individual tasks. The instructions were not exact for my opener, but were close enough to get the point. The steps start with removing the motor with the worm, removing the chain stem with the gear, replacing the worm, replacing the gear, and finally reassembling everything. Once the first two steps were completed I brought the parts inside to work on. I had the most trouble removing the tightly set pin to replace the gear. About two hours later, everything was reassembled and the garage door was working like a charm.
For those that want to save time, there is another kit with a complete gear stem for about $11 more. If time is an issue for you, consider the more expensive kit option. However for me, this kit worked well and is at the right price. Ultimately I need to replace my aging Craftsman garage door opener; however I can wait for the right time for me financially speaking.
PROS:
Inexpensive way to extend the life of your garage door opener
Simple enough instructions
CONS:
Using the kit may delay replacing the garage door opener for safety reasons
Time consuming to replace parts

Customer Review: Worked for 1997 1/2 hp Craftsman Garage Opener Summary: 4 Stars
Save your old pins, I had to reuse my old pins since this kit had different size pins. Like other reviewers, I would recommend paying $10 more to purchase the gear that already comes installed on the metal stem because it will save you the time and hassle of removing pins and reinstalling pins. I used a finishing nail punch to remove and install the pins with a little effort. I did not change the worm since it was in pretty good shape. I left the Garage door opener installed in place since it was easier for me to work with a ladder. Remember to use the grease pack on the gear and worm when installing. Also, purchase some lithium grease to grease the side rails and middle rail. Buy some lubricant to lubricate the chain and all door hinges and all wheels. Doing this will extend the life of the gear because it will place less tension on the gear and worm. This garage door opener lasted 12 years. Let's see if it can do another 12 plus years! I placed a sticker on the garage door opener with the date of the gear change for future reference. If you are not a do it yourself type of person, have no common sense, or have no mechanical aptitude whatsoever, it might be easier to pay a professional to do it. I enjoyed the experience and it was rewarding but I would not recommend this job to people who don't know the difference between a door and a window. It is not as hard as it seems. Just use common sense, be detailed, observant and ready to read instructions and learn.
Customer Review: Worm Gear Replacement Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased two worm gear kits and was very satisfied with prompt delivery and the parts included, I had two door openers that almost simontainously went out ,it took one and a half hours to do the first one,But only 45 minuts to do the second one after having the right tools,I used two two by fours for the main sprocket gear(bigger of the two)a punch quickly removed the roll pin using this method, When removing the smaller gear you have to use a punch to remove the motor, I don't recomend hitting the shaft of the motor with a hammer, a little clean up with a flat file was needed to clean the area where the set screws were in order to replace with new part, The set screws were a little to long that came with the kit and I re-used the old ones, after replaceing everything ,It took a little time to reset the doors down travel and up travel, and the sensors that stop the door if anything is under it,Make sure that while working on the door opener you have it unplugged, the instructions are a little vauge but really this isn't rocket science, Just have to remember what you took off and to re-assemble accordingly,
My garage doors work fine now and I saved over $550.00 , That I would have spent on two new openers with installation,
Customer Review: Check the problem first Summary: 4 Stars
After reading all reviews here, I thought I'd give it a try.
The gear was all shredded up and I didn't want to spend $400 on a new opener.
A few comments:
1. Yes, you need 2 people to do this job (at least to put it back up)
2. Yes, getting the pin out is very, very difficult. Make sure to get the correct tool or you are in big trouble.
3. MAKE SURE TO CHECK WHY THE GEAR WAS WORN IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!
Turns out that I spent hours getting this gear on and not having fun doing so. Started the garage door up, and turns out my limit switch was not working, therefore shredding the gear up to nothing. Check the limit switch by touching the brass contacts before you go through this nightmare. If the motor does not stop, don't waste your time. At this time, if you are not an electronics expert, you are basically out of luck.
Ended up getting a whole new opener.
If the gear is really "worn" from regular use, and that's the only problem, yes, you will save money by doing this.....but......make sure you have 3 hours, the correct tools, and some patience or beer to get you though it.
