Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817Customer Review: A reasonable purchase... Summary: 5 Stars
A reasonable product at a reasonable price. Delivered as expected, working fine after installation, etc. I read where someone gave kudos for the instructions...I wasn't all that impressed, but that's a nit b/c this really isn't rocket science so you should be able to figure it out.
I learned some things with this overall experience though. First of all, I was surprised with the original garage door opener product -- that there'd even be plastic gears in these things. But after that revelation, I now realize how important it is that you keep the garage door system lubricated as I am certain that the absence of that is what caused my drive gear to get so shredded! I have since come across an advertisement that says something like "if your garage door is noisy...you're headed for trouble and need to lubricate...". Duh! Wish I'd have paid attention to the noise before this happened!
PS: When putting it all back together, pay attention to the orientation of the topmost piece that you are screwing the driveshaft into -- if it's not placed appropriately, you cannot attach the sprocket cover. To remedy, you have to backtrack quite a bit!
Customer Review: A few notes about replacing the Drive gear Summary: 5 Stars
This works perfectly, saves you a ton of money, isn't a difficult job, but does take a bit of time.
Just a few notes that I didn't find elsewhere.
I was able to replace the gear without taking down the whole unit.
Doing this means you need to hold the motor in place while removing a couple of screws, that's no fun on a ladder. Would certainly be 'easier' to take the whole thing down, so you might want to just do that first.
I could NOT get the roll pin (which holds the drive gear in place) out with any tricks. I finally went out and bought a 5\32nd punch, still couldn't get it, till I sprayed a little brake cleaner on it.
The instructions are great, and are basically a user manual for the unit. Explains the up\down screws and the up\down force knobs. When my gear stripped out, the unit lost track of when to stop the door. When I got everything replaced and re-engaged the chain the unit would keep trying to push the door down causing the whole track to bend up... scary.
Adjusted the down distance screw using the info in the instructions and it works perfectly.
Good luck.
Customer Review: Sears Garage Door Gear Replacement Summary: 5 Stars
As my son would say, Boo Ya! My husband is mechanically inclined and it took him about 3 hours to replace the gears on my garage door opener, but a good bit of this time was looking for the right allen wrench for the set screws and hammering a pin out of the drive shaft. He didn't have as much trouble with the pin as some have described--a few good whacks with a hammer and center punch after securing the drive shaft on a Black & Decker Workmate got the pin moving. He also opted to take down the garage door opener so that he could work on the thing in a comfortable position, and I think this was a good choice.
The original gear was pulverized, so a bit of time went to brushing out the old gear fragments with an old toothbrush. Hubby came out of the experience with a few minor cuts, scrapes, and a bruised thumb from one poorly aimed blow of the hammer but is happy to have saved $100 by doing it. Twelve hours later his thumb is fine and his cuts and scrapes are bandaged. The first set of gears lasted 18 years, so we are hoping this will keep the garage door opener in working order for several more years.
Customer Review: extend the life of your Garage door Opener Summary: 5 Stars
The Chamberlin Garage door gear kit replaces worn parts from many chain driven openers. The big nylon gear takes a lot of wear over the years, it wears out taking tension and vibration from such an operation over and over. If we'd open the thing up and keep it lubed, it would last a lot longer. Or it may be simpler to replace it every 8-10 years for about 10 bucks. I think the reason it is nylon/plastic is so the motor doesn't burn up. And it makes it a little quieter than a metal gear. Very easy to replace if you just remember your steps and don't drop any small parts into oblivion. I took mine apart, got this part in about 3 days, put it back together. It was working by the end of the week. I could have just bought the gear and lube and saved a few bucks. Some people have to replace both gears, (the spiral on the motor shaft) THAT takes a lot longer, and is more complex but do-able. Saves hundreds of dollars.
P.S. UNPLUG IT FIRST! AND LINE UP THE DOOR CATCH/CHAIN PROPERLY = Meaning at either postion full up or down, so your start/stop buttons and motor operation don't strip it back out!
Customer Review: Just what I needed Summary: 5 Stars
Shipping was faster than expected. I opened the cover on my opener before I ordered these parts and noticed the large gear (not the worm gear) was stripped. It was all dusty inside from the gear so I ordered this set instead of just the gear just in case I needed more parts when I took it apart.
Turns out, I did NOT need the other parts- not even the cotter pins used to keep the gear in place- I just used the old ones again since they were fine after I took them out. At least I have the grease and another worm gear if I need it. Directions were clear and since I only needed to replace the large gear, it went pretty quick considering I didn't have to, nor wanted to, take the whole garage door opener off the ceiling (about 30 minutes). The longest part of it, was unscrewing the 3 screws underneath the top of the opener.
I did manage to put a few small dents from my feet on the top of my car, so I guess I should have used a ladder.
Works as good as new. Easy way to save some $$ when you don't need to get a whole new opener.
