Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817Customer Review: Good Supplier, good product, straight forward installation Summary: 5 Stars
For those with average mechanical interest or skill this is a relatively easy way to save a $100. Delivery is quick and the gear set is an exact replacement. Unplug the unit, loosen the chain, remove the unit cover, unplug an electrical connector, disconnect the motor wires, remove the motor and vertical shaft and you have access to the worn gears.
Most will find that the most difficult part of the gear set replacement is driving out the spring pins in the motor and vertical shaft. For this you should really use a correctly sized drift pin or punch. After that, reassemble everything in reverse order and lube the gears well. As a result of the disassembly and reassembly you will need to readjust the door travel limit stop settings. The two screws for this adjustment are normally located on the outside (rear or side surface) of the opener unit.
Don't forget that you will be working on a ladder. I've replaced gear sets several times for friends and neighbors and usually complete the task within an hour.
Customer Review: Parts worked great - my solution to the pin problem.. Summary: 4 Stars
Concerning the pin extraction on the sprocket assembly. Because of the gear and the metal flange I used 2 2x4s sideways as a way to stabilize the parts while I smacked the pin with a hammer. I did not have a punch so first tried a nail but the pin is hollow so the pointy nail only widened the pin - not good. I then got a bolt of the right diameter and that worked much better however everything was very unsteady and I could not hit it hard enough. My solution was to screw the shaft to one of my 2X4s using a 3rd hole already in the shaft. Then I put the bolt in a pair of vice grips. The shaft did not move, my fingers did not get hurt and about 5 hard wacks later the pin was through. By the way I only removed the lower pin. Just finished puting everything back together - works great. Also I took this time to put some sound deadening mtrl on the opener metal cover plus some foam around the scrws holes. Now quieter.
Customer Review: easy fix but be careful Summary: 4 Stars
If you are mechanically inclined, this kit offers an easy way to extend the life of your garage door opener. Just be careful because door openers can cause serious injuries. Do it right the first time, because the second time it will be much harder if you are missing a finger.
These parts, along with the instructions, provide an easy fix for what is arguably a defect in this popular door opener. It's obvious that the cheap plastic gear is the weak link in the machine. As I suspected, I only needed the main gear, but for a few dollars more, I ordered this kit in case I needed something else. Now I've got extra parts that I dont need (yet), but I would definitely do it the same way again.
I was able to skip most of the instruction steps (because I only needed to change the main gear) so it took me less than 30 minutes. If you need to change the worm gear, it will take much longer.
Customer Review: well worth the money Summary: 5 Stars
I used this kit to repair an old Craftsman chain drive model. I am reasonably handy but far from a mechanical expert. The directions are pretty clear, however it would have been helpful if some of the terms were defined. There were a couple of instances where part names were referenced and I did not know what they were referring to. But I was able to figure it out. One pointer for others ... when reassembing the 'worm' drive you are required to put a new clip on the shaft. I spent about 1/2 hour trying to force the clip on before realizing that the shaft had an indentation for it. There is some play in how the shaft fits into the motor harness, and if you do not have it pulled out enough (or do not hold down the washers) you will not notice it. All in all I would recommend this to anyone who can do relatively straight-forward repairs. I'm hoping to get a couple more years out of my old opener now.
Customer Review: Like New Again Summary: 4 Stars
The main drive gear wore out in my Liftmaster after 10 years of daily use. I used most of the parts that came with this kit. Everything fit perfectly and my garage door opener is like new now. The instructions that came with it were a little off. Some steps were missing from the instructions, but with a little time spent staring at the inner workings of the garage door opener, and looking at the pictures on the instructions, I was able to figure it out easy enough. The job took me about 4 hours. There are a lot of screws and other little parts to keep track of. I fastened a strip of duct tape sticky side up on my work bench and stuck all the little parts on it and labeled them. I also used masking tape to label some of the wires that had to be disconnected. This made reassembly very easy. I would have gave 5 stars if the instructions were better.
