Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817

Customer Review: Not bad
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't really enjoy doing home maintenance projects, I'm young and lazy, but replacing a stripped gear seemed like something I could handle.

Some notes: This really needed to be a two person job. I didn't realize it at the time, but hanging the garage door opener back on the ceiling is a lot harder than getting it down!

Also, I had an extremely difficult time removing the gear pin from the shaft. I must have hammered at that thing for hours. I ended up burning the plastic gear off in a wood stove. Which was a cheat for inadequate tools, but it worked! I was able to pull the pin out straight away after that.

So now my garage door works once again. Also the kit arrived quickly and came with surprisingly good instructions.

Customer Review: Perfect fix, repair a little involved though
Summary: 4 Stars

After 15 years of service, my Liftmaster garage door opener finally failed. It started out only lifting the door about half way, then the gear stripped out. I didn't feel like dropping $$$ on a new opener, so I found this kit online. If you are up for the task, this kit does the job well. The instructions are pretty good although not perfect. The only difficult part is removing the roller pins on the main drive shaft and the collar on the worm gear. Make sure you have a punch to remove the pin although I used a nail effectively. If you're not mechanically inclined or don't have the tools, you may get frustrated. After installation, you'll need to tinker with the setting on the door to get it to open and close properly. Total repair time was about 1.5 hrs.

Customer Review: Parts as good as original-One issue with instructions
Summary: 4 Stars

This was a very complete kit. I didn't use the hardware that came with it as I found it easier to use the original. I only replaced the worm gear and the sprocket gear. It took me two hours start to finish and that included two trips to the neighbors to borrow a punch and use a vise.

The only issue I ran into was with the instructions. Page 2, section 5, line 2 says to run the opener until it completes a "clockwise" cycle. After following these instructions twice, I found I had to allow it to complete a "counter clockwise" cycle for it to work properly. Once I figured this out, it was smooth sailing. I don't know if this was a misprint, or because this kit is universal (I have a Craftsman).

Overall, I recommend this product.

Customer Review: with a little elbow grease
Summary: 5 Stars

As most reviews say this project took me about 2 hours and then another hour of tweaking the opener settings and cleaning up. If I had to do this again I could get it done in less than 2 hours for sure.

I had all the tools except for a (nail) punch but got the pin out with an extended square drill bit and hammer. It helps to have a vice or something hard to pound against for that step.

All the parts I needed were included and I was very generous with the lube but only used about half of the tube. I'll probably keep the rest and re-apply in a year or so to make sure the main gear doesn't get stripped again. I'm not sure why these gears are plastic and I don't think they make metal replacements.

Customer Review: Parts and instructions work well
Summary: 4 Stars

The parts arrived on time and were as ordered.
All the parts I needed were included and some parts were not necessary to fix my opener. My opener is more than 15 years old. The instructions did not match the configuration of my unit, but the concepts were the same and I was able to accommodate the differences once I understood the general procedure, the order of events and the components of the mechanism. It took about three hours to do the complete job, including small adjustments to the door open and door close stops and getting the correct tension on the chain. I completed the repair three weeks ago and have cycled the door at least 20 times, including the five test cycles. Everything works fine.
