Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Gear Kit - Part #41A2817Customer Review: Right parts, slow service Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this kit after having called sears and figuring out that just for them to come and take a look they would charge a ridiculous amount of money. I figured I would just buy the kit and give it a shot myself or buy a new garage door opener. Still I wanted the kit delivered in ASAP and the company took its sweet a*s time sending it over after I paid for the fastest delivery. The kit is what it is and the pieces worked, although it was more trouble than I thought to replace the parts (specially removing those stupid pins). All in all 3 stars for Sanford and Son for slow service and 4 stars for the kit, since the instructions don't mention the tools you'll need to disassemble the opener.
Customer Review: save money and the landfill Summary: 4 Stars
i ordered this so i would not have to purchase an entirely new gagage door opener. It took me about 3 hours and 3 beers to get the job done (i wonder if i drank one beer if it would take one hour). it works great and there is one less opener in the landfill. With the extra $100 bucks i saved, i took my family out to dinner. i would have given the product 5 stars but it seems silly that they make the most critical part - the gear - out of plastic. nonetheless, it was sort of fun to fix it myself with minimal tools. i think that when the other garage door goes, it will likely take about 30 - 45 minutes now that i know what i am doing.
Customer Review: A "Tool-Time" project! Summary: 4 Stars
Like others who have reviewed this kit on Amazon, I had problems because I don't have a workbench, a vise, or the correct size punch. I bought a punch for a couple of bucks, improvised a workbench with a block of wood, and substituted vise-grip pliers for the vise. I had all the other necessary sockets and wrenches. Once I was past these problems, interpreting the directions raised it's head. It seems the kit will work with multiple models of openers, so they threw-in parts for all of them. The result is that when you're finished, you have new parts left over - - - I think!
In the end, it worked. But it wasn't easy.
Customer Review: no mas tomas Summary: 5 Stars
cheap and easy soloution to fixing garage door opener..tip: take your time taking apart, read directions carefully and several times. you do not need to buy the parts kits that have the nylon gears already installed on a new shaft...You are wasting money..not neccessary, no advantage..takes some finess to knock out shaft pin but no big deal..I did it. Saved me service call and probably the cost of new opener..Now when your done lube the hell out of all rollers, chains, guides and springs and readjust the opening and closing adjustments. I am probably good for 5 years or better. Don't be a PUTZ and call a service guy...do it yourself.
Customer Review: Fast shipping. Kit works. Summary: 5 Stars
The kit includes extra parts for a couple variation of designs but this is not confusing. They are in separate little bags.
The instructions are good.
One important timesaving point: when you put the sprocket back on you will affix the couling with 3 screws. It appears this can ( and will ) go on in any orientation. BUT make sure you put in on in the orientation so the slots in the couling will allow the plastic cover to be snapped in place and cover the chain and sprocket. If you orient it wrong you will not be able to snap it in place and have to back track a few steps and turns some screws. No biggy.
