Package contains more than what you need. Replacement is fairly easy. I did not follow the instruction exactly. Some steps don't apply to my unit. The only difficulty is to remove the pin from the shaft. You need a hammer and another solid pin to knock it out. Don't knock too hard to bend the shaft or damage the bearing but hard enough to remove the pin. Hold the end of the shaft while knocking would prevent damage. I used two fingers to hold the pin and the rest of the hand to hold the shaft and the other hand to hold the hammer - a challenge job. Now the door opener works like a dream. Yes, this kit works and once installed it's great. That said, save yourself the massive frustrations and buy the pre-assembled kit. It's worth the extra $10 or $15. In order to replace the large gear, you have to knock out the two pins currently holding the old gear in place. Sounds easy; it's not. This took hours upon hours and I had the proper tools (punch and a hammer). Knocking a pin out of a greased spindle is tricky enough, but the pins are metal and are basically fused to the metal spindle. The garage I repaired was about 8 years old, so perhaps if yours is newer, the pins won't be so firmly set.Customer Review: Chamberlain/Sears gear kit review

Excellent kit. It includes everything you need to completely rebuild wear items. I only replaced the main drive gear as the worm was only slightly worn. It took about an hour. Hardest part was removing the roll pins that hold the gear to the shaft (I used my bench vise to hold the gear/shaft). If you have V-blocks this would be easier. The garage door operated very smoothly afterwards. Definitely recommend giving this kit a try if you are mechanically inclined. Much better than buying a new opener when all that's needed are a few inexpensive parts.
Parts also came quickly and were well packaged.

By using this kit to replace the gear in my garage door opener, I was able to get my garage door working without having to call a repair man. The kit comes with instructions that step you through the process of disassembling the opener and installing the new parts. The only negative is that I couldn't just buy the single part I needed. However, compared to the cost of having someone come and fix my opener, this saved me a ton of money. Also, be aware that you will need to buy a punch in order to remove and install the new gears. Again, however, the cost is negligible compared to the alternative.Customer Review: Quality part!

My garage door stopped working. After some googling, I opened the opener and saw the gear was completely stripped. Only needed the big gear replaced but this set was cheapest I can find. Most others sell the whole sprocket assembly, but mine are still good except the gear. Got it a few days after ordering it, and surprised it has instruction in it. Great. It took me a few hours to replace the worn gear and readjust the opener setting. But the results is great--my garage door runs smoother than before !
